From the Ground Up argues that neighborhood communities emerge from neighbor networks, and shows that these social relations are unique because of particular geographic qualities. Highlighting the linked importance of geography and children to the emergence of neighborhood communities, Rick Grannis models how neighboring progresses through four stages: when geography allows individuals to be conveniently available to one another; when they have passive contacts or unintentional encounters; when they actually initiate contact; and when they engage in activities indicating trust or shared norms and values. Seamlessly integrating discussions of geography, household characteristics, and lifestyle, Grannis demonstrates that neighborhood communities exhibit dynamic processes throughout the different stages. He examines the households that relocate in order to choose their neighbors, the choices of interactions that develop, and the exchange of beliefs and influence that impact neighborhood communities over time. Grannis also introduces and explores two geographic concepts--t-communities and street islands--to capture the subtle features constraining residents' perceptions of their environment and community. Basing findings on thousands of interviews conducted through door-to-door canvassing in the Los Angeles area as well as other neighborhood communities, From the Ground Up reveals the different ways neighborhoods function and why these differences matter. 606 $aCommunity life 606 $aNeighborhoods 606 $aCommunities 606 $aEcology 615 0$aCommunity life. 615 0$aNeighborhoods. 615 0$aCommunities. 615 0$aEcology. 676 $a307.3/3620973 700 $aGrannis$b Rick$f1965-$01519296 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910781217503321 996 $aFrom the ground up$93757321 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01039nas 2200349 c 450 001 9910891830303321 005 20200605071714.0 035 $a(CKB)5280000000217820 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB3023395-1 035 $a(DE-101)1210711583 035 $a(EXLCZ)995280000000217820 100 $a20200522a19959999 |y | 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAnnual report ... and list of publications$e= Jahresbericht$fBayerisches Forschungsinstitut fu?r Experimentelle Geochemie und Geophysik ; Universita?t Bayreuth 210 31$aBayreuth$d[1995]- 215 $aOnline-Ressource 517 1 $aJahresbericht 517 1 $aAnual report 608 $aZeitschrift$2gnd-content 608 $aBericht$2gnd-content 676 $a550 801 0$b0006 801 1$bDE-101 801 2$b0355 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910891830303321 996 $aAnnual report ... and list of publications$94266936 997 $aUNINA
