Despite limited factual evidence, trans-Pacific contact theories between the Americas and Oceania have been discussed in various forms since the sixteenth century and remain a persistent trope. To provide a context for the history of ideas of trans-Pacific contact involving the Americas and Oceania, this book addresses the changing conceptions of the Pacific according to scholars from Europe and the Americas, the development of science and later anthropology and archaeology in this region and in the Americas, and the growing understanding of the history of settlement of the Americas and the Pacific. This book covers views predominantly from the Global South, making them more accessible to an Anglophone audience worldwide. Andrea Ballesteros Danel is an independent scholar based in Brisbane, Australia. She completed her PhD at the Australian National University in 2020. Her thesis focused on the history of ideas about pre-Columbian trans-Pacific contact between the Americas and Oceania. Her research was part of the Collective Biography of Archaeology in the Pacific (CBAP) project, a five-year project funded by the Australian Research Council through its Laureate Fellowship grant scheme, and by the Australian National University. 606 $aAmerica$xHistory 606 $aAustralasia 606 $aHistory 606 $aLatin America$xHistory 606 $aIntellectual life$xHistory 606 $aCivilization$xHistory 606 $aHistory of the Americas 606 $aAustralian History 606 $aLatin American History 606 $aHistory of Ideas 606 $aCultural History 615 0$aAmerica$xHistory. 615 0$aAustralasia. 615 0$aHistory. 615 0$aLatin America$xHistory. 615 0$aIntellectual life$xHistory. 615 0$aCivilization$xHistory. 615 14$aHistory of the Americas. 615 24$aAustralian History. 615 24$aLatin American History. 615 24$aHistory of Ideas. 615 24$aCultural History. 676 $a900 676 $a980 676 $a990 700 $aBallesteros - Danel$b Andrea$01770813 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910887880503321 996 $aPre-Columbian Contact between the Americas and Oceania$94254584 997 $aUNINA
