The contributors to this volume cover topics including ethnogenesis, slavery, settlements, poetics, religion, gender, family history, and mestizo genetics. Fray Angelico Cha?vez defined Geni?zaro as the ethnic term given to indigenous people of mixed tribal origins living among the Hispano population in Spanish fashion. They entered colonial society as captives taken during wars with Utes, Apaches, Comanches, Kiowas, Navajos, and Pawnees. Geni?zaros comprised a third of the population by 1800. Many assimilated into Hispano and Pueblo society, but others in the land-grant communities maintained their identity through ritual, self-government, and kinship. Today the persistence of Geni?zaro identity blurs the lines of distinction between Native and Hispanic frameworks of race and cultural affiliation. This is the first study to focus exclusively on the detribalized Native experience of the Geni?zaro in New Mexico"--$cProvided by publisher. 410 0$aQuerencias series. 606 $aEthnohistory$zNew Mexico 606 $aIndians of North America$zNew Mexico$xSocial conditions 606 $aRacism$zNew Mexico$xHistory 606 $aIndians, Treatment of$zNew Mexico 606 $aSlavery$zNew Mexico 606 $aIndians of North America$xEthnic identity 606 $aEthnohistoire$zNouveau-Mexique 606 $aIndiens d'Ame?rique$zNouveau-Mexique$xConditions sociales 606 $aRacisme$zNouveau-Mexique$xHistoire 606 $aSlavery$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01120426 606 $aRacism$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01086616 606 $aRace relations$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01086509 606 $aIndians, Treatment of$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00970120 606 $aIndians of North America$xSocial conditions$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00969904 606 $aIndians of North America$xEthnic identity$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00969733 606 $aEthnicity$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00916034 606 $aEthnohistory$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00916090 606 $aIndians of North America$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00969633 607 $aNew Mexico$xRace relations 607 $aNouveau-Mexique$xRelations raciales 607 $aNew Mexico$2fast 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aEthnohistory 615 0$aIndians of North America$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aRacism$xHistory. 615 0$aIndians, Treatment of 615 0$aSlavery 615 0$aIndians of North America$xEthnic identity. 615 6$aEthnohistoire 615 6$aIndiens d'Ame?rique$xConditions sociales. 615 6$aRacisme$xHistoire. 615 7$aSlavery. 615 7$aRacism. 615 7$aRace relations. 615 7$aIndians, Treatment of. 615 7$aIndians of North America$xSocial conditions. 615 7$aIndians of North America$xEthnic identity. 615 7$aEthnicity. 615 7$aEthnohistory. 615 7$aIndians of North America. 676 $a909.04 700 $aGonzales$b Moises$f1968-$01770678 702 $aLamadrid$b Enrique R.$f1948- 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910886034303321 996 $aNación Genízara$94253279 997 $aUNINA
