Ordinary birth events were cast as archetypal struggles between life and death that required the intervention of the "Hero-Accoucheur," who fought valiently to rescue the pregnant damsel-in-distress endangered by her own body. By casting themselves as literary heroes, medical men could present themselves as altruistic, disinterested professionals. Yet under the mask of altruism and scientific curiosity lurked a self-interested, hegemonic masculinity that justified the emerging medical specialties of obstetrics and gynecology--specialties that required the homogenization of white, bourgeois women as "the Sex." By charting the develpment of and struggles of obstetrical discourse, Fixing Women sheds light on the gender politics of a biomedical model and practice that continues to reverberate in our own time."--Page 4 of cover. 410 0$aPerspectives in medical humanities. 606 $aObstetrics$2fast 606 $aMidwifery$2fast 606 $aGynecology$2fast 606 $aGynecologie$xHistoire 606 $aObstetrique$xHistoire 606 $aSages-femmes$zE?tats-Unis$xHistoire$y18e siecle 606 $aSages-femmes$zGrande-Bretagne$xHistoire$y18e siecle 606 $aMidwives$zUnited States$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aGynecology$xHistory 606 $aObstetrics$xHistory 606 $aMidwifery$zUnited States$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aMidwifery$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y18th century 607 $aUnited States$2fast 607 $aGreat Britain$2fast 608 $aHistory 608 $aElectronic books. 615 7$aObstetrics 615 7$aMidwifery 615 7$aGynecology 615 6$aGynecologie$xHistoire. 615 6$aObstetrique$xHistoire. 615 6$aSages-femmes$xHistoire 615 6$aSages-femmes$xHistoire 615 0$aMidwives$xHistory 615 0$aGynecology$xHistory. 615 0$aObstetrics$xHistory. 615 0$aMidwifery$xHistory 615 0$aMidwifery$xHistory 700 $aNichols$b Marcia D.$f1978-$01771496 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910882998403321 996 $aFixing Women$94261767 997 $aUNINA
