The combination of these perspectives has allowed for a more complete description of the factors shaping cities in the past and still developing them. The book opens with an explanation of how cities can be analyzed, whereas the two chapters immediately following deals with the history of cities from the old towns to modern conurbations as well as with the variants of urbanization. The next chapter discusses the main features of modern cities. Later in his work, the author focuses on communities and their contemporary forms. The last two sections are devoted to the reflection of cities in the social consciousness, to their dynamics and spirit. There are references to general history, the history of city construction and demography, cultural anthropology and economic theories throughout the book. The main perspective is the sociological approach to cities, which for centuries have imprinted themselves on people's mentality, modified their lifestyles and dictated various forms of activity. This approach assumes that not buildings, but people, their social life and culture are the most important aspects of cities. Urban issues have always been important for many reasons, and today they are also worth discussing due to new phenomena and problems. Already by 2008, for the first time in history, the number of city dwellers had exceeded 50% of the world's population. The big cities acquire 1 million new inhabitants every week; by 2050, it is predicted, they will have accounted for more than two thirds of the planet's population. This volume is the outcome of a study of Polish and foreign, almost exclusively English-language literature, as well as many thoughts and many years of experience in the university didactics of urban sociology. The author believes that most of the destructive phenomena attributed to cities, which have been noticed for a long time, can be repaired or even removed provided that appropriate renewal strategies are implemented. He also expects the readers to agree with his outlook, and hopes that the book will encourage people to take an independent stance on particular issues. This publication may be of interest to students of faculties related in various ways to urban topics and to professionals whose work consists in solving everyday urban problems. 606 $aSocial sciences 606 $aEconomy 606 $aSociology 606 $aRural and urban sociology 606 $aSocio-Economic Research 615 0$aSocial sciences. 615 0$aEconomy 615 0$aSociology 615 0$aRural and urban sociology 615 0$aSocio-Economic Research 700 $aMajer$b Andrzej$01827659 712 02$aCentral and Eastern European Online Library 801 0$bceeol 801 1$bceeol 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910874769403321 996 $aMiasto wed?ug socjologii. It uses a two-stage approach to address possible endogeneity issues. The results show that successful implementation of IMF programs is associated with improvements in the quality of economic governance. Specifically, the paper finds statistically robust results that IMF concessional programs through the Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility tend to enhance the rule of law and strengthen control of corruption. Through this exercise, however, no statistically significant effect is observed for assistances under the General Resource Account. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2008/114 606 $aEconomic assistance$zDeveloping countries$xEconometric models 606 $aEconomic development$zDeveloping countries$xEconometric models 606 $aAdministrative Processes in Public Organizations$2imf 606 $aBanking$2imf 606 $aBanks and Banking$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking$2imf 606 $aBanks$2imf 606 $aBureaucracy$2imf 606 $aCorporate crime$2imf 606 $aCorruption$2imf 606 $aCriminology$2imf 606 $aDepository Institutions$2imf 606 $aDiscrete Regression and Qualitative Choice Models$2imf 606 $aDiscrete Regressors$2imf 606 $aEconometric models$2imf 606 $aEconometrics & economic statistics$2imf 606 $aEconometrics$2imf 606 $aIncome$2imf 606 $aLegal support in revenue administration$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aMicro Finance Institutions$2imf 606 $aMortgages$2imf 606 $aPersonal income$2imf 606 $aPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their Distributions$2imf 606 $aProbit models$2imf 606 $aProportions$2imf 606 $aPublic finance & taxation$2imf 606 $aPublic Finance$2imf 606 $aRevenue$2imf 606 $aTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: General$2imf 606 $aWhite-collar crime$2imf 607 $aMontenegro$2imf 615 0$aEconomic assistance$xEconometric models. 615 0$aEconomic development$xEconometric models. 615 7$aAdministrative Processes in Public Organizations 615 7$aBanking 615 7$aBanks and Banking 615 7$aBanks and banking 615 7$aBanks 615 7$aBureaucracy 615 7$aCorporate crime 615 7$aCorruption 615 7$aCriminology 615 7$aDepository Institutions 615 7$aDiscrete Regression and Qualitative Choice Models 615 7$aDiscrete Regressors 615 7$aEconometric models 615 7$aEconometrics & economic statistics 615 7$aEconometrics 615 7$aIncome 615 7$aLegal support in revenue administration 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aMicro Finance Institutions 615 7$aMortgages 615 7$aPersonal income 615 7$aPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their Distributions 615 7$aProbit models 615 7$aProportions 615 7$aPublic finance & taxation 615 7$aPublic Finance 615 7$aRevenue 615 7$aTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: General 615 7$aWhite-collar crime 676 $a353.00722 700 $aHonda$b Jiro?$00 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910970757503321 996 $aDo IMF Programs Improve Economic Governance$94348943 997 $aUNINA
