Chicana Lives and Criminal Justice uses oral history to chronicle the lives of twenty-four Chicana pintas (prisoners/former prisoners) repeatedly arrested and incarcerated for non-violent, low-level economic and drug-related crimes. It also provides the first documentation of the thirty-four-year history of Sybil Brand Institute, Los Angeles' former women's jail. In a time and place where drug war policies target people of color and their communities, drug-addicted Chicanas are caught up in an endless cycle of police abuse, arrest, and incarceration. They feel the impact of mandatory sentencing laws, failing social services and endemic poverty, violence, racism, and gender discrimination. The women in this book frankly discuss not only their jail experiences, but also their family histories, involvement with gangs, addiction to drugs, encounters with the juvenile and adult criminal justice systems, and their successful and unsuccessful attempts to recover from addiction and reconstitute fractured families. The Chicanas' stories underscore the amazing resilience and determination that have allowed many of the women to break the cycle of abuse. Díaz-Cotto also makes policy recommendations for those who come in contact with Chicanas/Latinas caught in the criminal justice system. 606 $aWomen prisoners$zCalifornia 606 $aFemale offenders$zCalifornia 606 $aMexican American women$zCalifornia$vBiography 606 $aMexican American women$zCalifornia$xSocial conditions 615 0$aWomen prisoners 615 0$aFemale offenders 615 0$aMexican American women 615 0$aMexican American women$xSocial conditions. 676 $a365/.43092368720794 700 $aDi?az-Cotto$b Juanita$f1953-$01683969 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910813891503321 996 $aChicana lives and criminal justice$94055134 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00933oam 2200265z- 450 001 9910872920303321 005 20241212215120.0 035 $a(CKB)111055184231632 035 $a(EXLCZ)99111055184231632 100 $a20220504c1992uuuu -u- - 101 0 $aeng 200 10$aProceedings of the 1992 International Biomedical Engineering Days, August 18-20, 1992, I?stanbul, Turkey /$fedited by Yekta U?lgen 210 $cIEEE 311 08$a9780780307438 311 08$a0780307437 606 $aBiomedical engineering$vCongresses 615 0$aBiomedical engineering 676 $a610/.28 701 0$aU?lgen$b Yekta$01231958 712 02$aBog?azic?i U?niversitesi. 712 02$aIEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910872920303321 996 $aProceedings of the 1992 International Biomedical Engineering Days, August 18-20, 1992, I?stanbul, Turkey$92860571 997 $aUNINA
