But, what is one to make of the utopias of progress and development for which these buildings and sites stand? After all, concern for 'modern heritage' invariably--and paradoxically it seems--has to reckon with those utopias as problematic futures of the past, a circumstance complicating intentions to preserve a recent 'culture' of modernization on the African continent. This book, a new title in Routledge's Studies in Culture and Development series, introduces the concept of 'global heritage assemblages' to analyse that problem. Based on extensive anthropological fieldwork, it describes how various governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental actors engage with colonial and post-colonial built heritage found in Eritrea, Tanzania, Niger, and the Republic of the Congo. Rausch argues that the global heritage assemblages emerging from those examples produce problematizations of the modern', which ultimately indicate a contemporary need to rescue modernity from its dominant conception as an all-encompassing, epochal, and spatial culture. 606 $aCultural property$xProtection$xInternational cooperation 606 $aCultural property$xProtection$zAfrica 606 $aWorld Heritage areas$zAfrica 606 $aArchitecture and anthropology$zAfrica 615 0$aCultural property$xProtection$xInternational cooperation. 615 0$aCultural property$xProtection 615 0$aWorld Heritage areas 615 0$aArchitecture and anthropology 676 $a363.6/9096 700 $aRausch$b Christoph.$0976307 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910969761603321 996 $aGlobal heritage assemblages$94469226 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01800oam 2200481zu 450 001 9910872794103321 005 20241212214822.0 035 $a(CKB)111026746712694 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000450633 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12167882 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000450633 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10458753 035 $a(PQKB)11206151 035 $a(EXLCZ)99111026746712694 100 $a20160829d1995 uy 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$a1995 International IEEE/IAS Conference on Industrial Automation and Control: Emerging Technologies : May 22-27, 1995, National Taipei Institute of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C 210 31$a[Place of publication not identified]$cInstitute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers$d1995 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 08$a9780780326453 311 08$a0780326458 606 $aDigital control systems$xCongresses 606 $aAutomation$xCongresses$xData processing 606 $aAutomatic control$vCongresses 606 $aMechanical Engineering$2HILCC 606 $aEngineering & Applied Sciences$2HILCC 606 $aMechanical Engineering - General$2HILCC 615 0$aDigital control systems$xCongresses. 615 0$aAutomation$xCongresses$xData processing. 615 0$aAutomatic control 615 7$aMechanical Engineering 615 7$aEngineering & Applied Sciences 615 7$aMechanical Engineering - General 712 02$aIEEE Industry Applications Society, 712 12$aInternational IEEE/IAS Conference on Industrial Automation and Control: Emerging Technologies 801 0$bPQKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910872794103321 996 $a1995 International IEEE$92502891 997 $aUNINA
