The author combines a study of genres that have traditionally been the object of literary study--poetry, theatre, autobiography--with a language- based analysis of other areas that have largely been studied by historians or theologians. She argues that these generic separations grew out of an increasing preoccupation with the cultivation and control of interiorized spirituality beginning around 1500. She shows that by tracing certain 'mystic memes' we come to understand the emergence of different discursive rules and expectations for a wide range of representations of the ineffable. The work focuses on the circulation of mystic discourse across theological manuals, poetry, theatre, Inquisition testimony, autobiography and transatlantic encounters."--$cProvided by publisher. 410 0$aToronto Iberic 606 $aMysticism and literature$zSpain$xHistory 606 $aMysticism in literature 606 $aMysticism$zSpain$xHistory 606 $aSpanish literature$yClassical period, 1500-1700$xHistory and criticism 606 $aLITERARY CRITICISM / European / Spanish & Portuguese$2bisacsh 607 $aSpain$2fast 608 $aHistory. 608 $aCriticism, interpretation, etc. 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aEarly modern Spain. 610 $aInquisition. 610 $aSpanish literature. 610 $aTeresa of Ávila. 610 $aalumbradismo. 610 $amystic literature. 610 $amystic poetry. 610 $amysticism on stage. 610 $amysticism. 610 $aprayer manuals. 610 $arecogimiento. 610 $aspiritual autobiography. 615 0$aMysticism and literature$xHistory. 615 0$aMysticism in literature. 615 0$aMysticism$xHistory. 615 0$aSpanish literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 7$aLITERARY CRITICISM / European / Spanish & Portuguese. 676 $a860.9/353 700 $aShuger$b Dale$01729359 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910838318603321 996 $aGod made word$94139126 997 $aUNINA
