In the years to come, the bombings, shootings, kidnappings and bank robberies of the Red Army Faction (RAF) and Movement 2nd June dominated newspaper headlines and polarized legislative debates. Half of the terrorists declaring war on the West German state were women who understood their violent political actions to be part of their liberation from restrictive gender norms. As women participating in a brand of systematic violence usually associated with masculinity, they presented a cultural paradox, and their political decisions were viewed as gender transgressions by the state, the public, and even the burgeoning women?s movement, which considered violence as patriarchal and unfeminist. Death in the Shape of a Young Girl questions this separation of political violence from feminist politics and offers a new understanding of left-wing female terrorists? actions as feminist practices that challenged existing gender ideologies. Patricia Melzer draws on archival sources, unpublished letters, and interviews with former activists to paint a fresh and interdisciplinary picture of West Germany?s most notorious political group, from feminist responses to sexist media coverage of female terrorists to the gendered nature of their infamous hunger strikes while in prison. Placing the controversial actions of the Red Army Faction into the context of feminist politics, Death in the Shape of a Young Girl offers an innovative and engaging cultural history that foregrounds how gender shapes our perception of women?s political choices and of any kind of political violence. 410 0$aGender and political violence series. 606 $aPolitiska fo?rha?llanden$2sao 606 $aKo?nsroller$xpolitiska aspekter$2sao 606 $aPolitiskt va?ld$xgenusaspekter$2sao 606 $aKvinnliga revolutiona?rer$2sao 606 $aKvinnliga terrorister$2sao 606 $aTerrorismus$2gnd 606 $aFrau$2gnd 606 $aPolitik$2gnd 606 $aGewalt$2gnd 606 $aWomen terrorists$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01178616 606 $aWomen revolutionaries$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01178470 606 $aWomen political activists$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01178374 606 $aSocial conditions$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01919811 606 $aSex role$xPolitical aspects$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01114616 606 $aPolitics and government$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01919741 606 $aPolitical violence$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01069902 606 $aFeminism$xPolitical aspects$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00922695 606 $aFeminism$xPolitical aspects$zGermany$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aSex role$xPolitical aspects$zGermany$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aPolitical violence$zGermany$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aWomen political activists$zGermany$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aWomen revolutionaries$zGermany$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aWomen terrorists$zGermany$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aGermany$2fast 607 $aGermany$xSocial conditions$y20th century 607 $aGermany$xPolitics and government$y1945-1990 608 $aHistory. 608 $aHistory. 615 7$aPolitiska fo?rha?llanden. 615 7$aKo?nsroller$xpolitiska aspekter. 615 7$aPolitiskt va?ld$xgenusaspekter. 615 7$aKvinnliga revolutiona?rer. 615 7$aKvinnliga terrorister. 615 7$aTerrorismus 615 7$aFrau 615 7$aPolitik 615 7$aGewalt 615 7$aWomen terrorists. 615 7$aWomen revolutionaries. 615 7$aWomen political activists. 615 7$aSocial conditions. 615 7$aSex role$xPolitical aspects. 615 7$aPolitics and government. 615 7$aPolitical violence. 615 7$aFeminism$xPolitical aspects. 615 7$aFeminism$xPolitical aspects$xHistory 615 7$aSex role$xPolitical aspects$xHistory 615 7$aPolitical violence$xHistory 615 7$aWomen political activists$xHistory 615 7$aWomen revolutionaries$xHistory 615 7$aWomen terrorists$xHistory 676 $a363.325082/0943 700 $aMelzer$b Patricia$f1970-$01663060 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910838165903321 996 $aDeath in the Shape of a Young Girl$94128265 997 $aUNINA
