Eakin. 330 $aPublished by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Antarctic Research Series, Volume 31.The osteology of the Ross seal (Ommatophoca rossi) is described. The bones of this species closely resemble those of Leptonychotes, the only other Monachinae for which a general osteology is available. The hand and foot of Ommatophoca are relatively longer than those of other phocids, and several characteristics of this seal are adaptative modifications for swimming and for swallowing large prey. Possible sexual discriminating characteristics are discussed. 410 0$aAntarctic research series ;$v31. 606 $aMarine biology$zAntarctica 606 $aMarine biology$zArctic regions 606 $aFishes$zAntarctica$vClassification 615 0$aMarine biology 615 0$aMarine biology 615 0$aFishes 676 $a574.92/4 s 676 $a599/.748 700 0$aPie?rard$b Jean$f1934-$01230295 702 $aKornicker$b Louis S.$f1919- 801 0$bPQKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910831168703321 996 $aBiology of the Antarctic Seas IX$92856040 997 $aUNINA
