Ce fonds, constitué de 1971 à 1985 selon la volonté du fondateur de la V e République, avait déjà fait l'objet de premiers outils d'orientation, mais jamais encore, dans son intégralité, il n'avait donné lieu à un ouvrage exhaustif, prenant en compte des données inédites : sources photographiques, documents relatifs aux événements d'Algérie et à la modernisation de la France, pièces complémentaires reçues ou acquises depuis lors... La journée d'étude organisée le 20 novembre 2012, dont les actes sont ici accessibles en ligne, a mis en valeur chacun des grands aspects précisément évoqués par ces sources, donnant à voir sous un oeil nouveau les choix politiques du Général, ses directives, ses lettres aux écrivains et artistes contemporains par exemple et tant d?événements gravés dans la mémoire collective.
