Introduction -- 2. Criminal Bodies -- 3. The Corpse Gives Life -- 4. The Places and Tools of Execution -- 5. Lingering Influences -- Index. 330 $aThis book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license This book explores the magical and medical history of executions from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century by looking at the afterlife potency of criminal corpses, the healing activities of the executioner, and the magic of the gallows site. The use of corpses in medicine and magic has been recorded back into antiquity. The lacerated bodies of Roman gladiators were used as a source of curative blood, for instance. In early modern Europe, a great trade opened up in ancient Egyptian mummies and the fat of executed criminals, plundered as medicinal cure-alls. However, this is the first book to consider the demand for the blood of the executed, the desire for human fat, the resort to the hanged man's hand, and the trade in hanging rope in the modern era. It ends by look at the spiritual afterlife of dead criminals. 410 0$aPalgrave Historical Studies in the Criminal Corpse and its Afterlife,$x2947-6356 606 $aSocial history 606 $aScience$xHistory 606 $aCrime$xSociological aspects 606 $aGreat Britain$xHistory 606 $aCivilization$xHistory 606 $aSocial History 606 $aHistory of Science 606 $aCrime and Society 606 $aHistory of Britain and Ireland 606 $aCultural History 615 0$aSocial history. 615 0$aScience$xHistory. 615 0$aCrime$xSociological aspects. 615 0$aGreat Britain$xHistory. 615 0$aCivilization$xHistory. 615 14$aSocial History. 615 24$aHistory of Science. 615 24$aCrime and Society. 615 24$aHistory of Britain and Ireland. 615 24$aCultural History. 676 $a306.09 686 $aHIS015000$aHIS054000$aSCI034000$aSOC004000$2bisacsh 700 $aDavies$b Owen$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0800733 702 $aMatteoni$b Francesca$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910231238503321 996 $aExecuting Magic in the Modern Era$91925578 997 $aUNINA
