It has also become clear that this microenvironment is acidic and thus hostile to the growth and survival of viable normal cells. These observations lead to several fundamentally important questions that form the basis for this book. What are the relationships between tumour perfusion and tumour pH? What are the effects of tumour pH and hypoxia on carcinogenesis or tumorigenesis? What are the therapeutic consequences of tumour pH? This exciting book brings together leading clinicians and researchers to address some of these key issues. It is hypothesized that low extracellular pH is not only an important consequence of tumour growth but may also promote further tumorigenic transformation. Furthermore, in vitro studies suggest that low pH strongly affects the efficacy of chemo- and radiotherapy. Therapeutic strategies taking into account the consequences of altered pH, or which seek to manipulate tumour pH, more be more effective than those currently employed. 410 0$aNovartis Foundation Symposia 606 $aCell Hypoxia 606 $aNeoplasm Invasiveness 606 $aHydrogen-Ion Concentration 606 $aNeoplasm Metastasis 606 $aNeoplasms 606 $aChemical Phenomena 606 $aNeoplastic Processes 606 $aDiseases 606 $aCell Respiration 606 $aMetabolism 606 $aPathologic Processes 606 $aPhenomena and Processes 606 $aCell Physiological Processes 606 $aPathological Conditions, Signs and Symptoms 606 $aMetabolic Phenomena 606 $aCell Physiological Phenomena 606 $aOncology$2HILCC 606 $aMedicine$2HILCC 606 $aHealth & Biological Sciences$2HILCC 615 2$aCell Hypoxia 615 2$aNeoplasm Invasiveness 615 2$aHydrogen-Ion Concentration 615 2$aNeoplasm Metastasis 615 2$aNeoplasms 615 2$aChemical Phenomena 615 2$aNeoplastic Processes 615 2$aDiseases 615 2$aCell Respiration 615 2$aMetabolism 615 2$aPathologic Processes 615 2$aPhenomena and Processes 615 2$aCell Physiological Processes 615 2$aPathological Conditions, Signs and Symptoms 615 2$aMetabolic Phenomena 615 2$aCell Physiological Phenomena 615 7$aOncology 615 7$aMedicine 615 7$aHealth & Biological Sciences 676 $a616.992 702 $aChadwick$b Derek 702 $aGoode$b Jamie 712 02$aNovartis Foundation. 712 12$aSymposium on the Tumour Microenvironment: Causes and Consequences of Hypoxia and Acidity$f(2000 :$eLondon, England) 801 0$bPQKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910830571403321 996 $aThe tumour microenvironment : causes and consequences of hypoxia and acidity$94085330 997 $aUNINA
