He argues that a specific form of whiteness emerged in Canada that was heavily influenced by Britishness. Examining four allegorical figures that recur in a wide range of Canadian writings between 1820 and 1950 - the Loyalist fratricide, the enterprising Scottish orphan, the muscular Christian, and the maturing colonial son - Coleman outlines a genealogy of Canadian whiteness that remains powerfully influential in Canadian thinking to this day. Blending traditional literary analysis with the approaches of cultural studies and critical race theory, White Civility examines canonical literary texts, popular journalism, and mass market bestsellers to trace widespread ideas about Canadian citizenship during the optimistic nation-building years as well as during the years of disillusionment that followed the First World War and the Great Depression. Tracing the consistent project of white civility in Canadian letters, Coleman calls for resistance to this project by transforming whiteness into wry civility, unearthing rather than disavowing the history of racism in Canadian literary culture. 606 $aCanadian literature$xHistory and criticism 606 $aCanadian literature$xWhite authors$xHistory and criticism 606 $aRace relations in literature 607 $aCanada$xRace relations 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aCanadian literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aCanadian literature$xWhite authors$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aRace relations in literature. 676 $a810.9971 700 $aColeman$b Daniel$f1961-$01032835 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910456380703321 996 $aWhite civility$92450928 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02951nam 2200685 a 450 001 9910830557203321 005 20170815111511.0 010 $a1-4443-4401-3 010 $a1-78268-755-6 010 $a1-283-24051-3 010 $a9786613240514 010 $a1-4443-4403-X 010 $a1-4443-4400-5 035 $a(CKB)2550000000046140 035 $a(EBL)819311 035 $a(OCoLC)756280825 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000565173 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11397989 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000565173 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10528325 035 $a(PQKB)10886532 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC819311 035 $a(PPN)270597328 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000046140 100 $a20110302d2012 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aResearch methods in child language$b[electronic resource] $ea practical guide /$fedited by Erika Hoff 210 $aMalden, Mass. $cWiley-Blackwell$d2012 215 $a1 online resource (386 p.) 225 1 $aGuides to research methods in language and linguistics 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a1-4443-3125-6 311 $a1-4443-3124-8 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $apt. 1.
