Cynthia Scheinberg examines Anglo-Jewish (Grace Aguilar and Amy Levy) and Christian (Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti) women poets, and argues that there are important connections between the discourses of nineteenth-century poetry, gender and religious identity. Further, Scheinberg argues that Jewish and Christian women poets had a special interest in Jewish discourse; calling on images from Judaism and the Hebrew Scriptures, their poetry created complex arguments about the relationships between Jewish and female artistic identity. She suggests that Jewish and Christian women used poetry as a site for creative and original theological interpretation, and that they entered into dialogue through their poetry about their own and each other's religious and artistic identities. This book's interdisciplinary methodology calls on poetics, religious studies, feminist literary criticism, and little read Anglo-Jewish primary sources. 410 0$aCambridge studies in nineteenth-century literature and culture ;$v35. 606 $aReligious poetry, English$xHistory and criticism 606 $aChristianity and literature$zEngland$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aWomen and literature$zEngland$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aEnglish poetry$xJewish authors$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEnglish poetry$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEnglish poetry$y19th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aChristian poetry, English$y19th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aJewish women$zGreat Britain$xIntellectual life 606 $aJewish poetry$xHistory and criticism 606 $aJudaism and literature$zEngland 606 $aJews in literature 615 0$aReligious poetry, English$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aChristianity and literature$xHistory 615 0$aWomen and literature$xHistory 615 0$aEnglish poetry$xJewish authors$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEnglish poetry$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEnglish poetry$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aChristian poetry, English$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aJewish women$xIntellectual life. 615 0$aJewish poetry$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aJudaism and literature 615 0$aJews in literature. 676 $a821/.809382 700 $aScheinberg$b Cynthia$01650835 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910829181303321 996 $aWomen's poetry and religion in Victorian England$94000441 997 $aUNINA
