The study reframes the existing critique of the two-level reading of John 9 as allegory in terms of premodern exegetical practices. It offers a hermeneutical critique of the two-level reading strategy as a kind of figural exegesis, rather than historical reconstruction, through an extensive comparison with Augustine's interpretation of John 9. A review of several premodern Christian readings of John 9 suggests an alternative way of understanding this account in terms of Greco-Roman rhetoric. John 9 resembles the rhetorical argumentation associated with chreia elaboration and the complete argument to display Jesus' identity as the Light of the World. This analysis illustrates the inseparability of form and content, rhetoric and theology, in the Fourth Gospel. 410 0$aBeihefte zur Zeitschrift fu?r die neutestamentliche Wissenschaft und die Kunde der a?lteren Kirche ;$vBeiheft 165. 606 $3(DE-601)105396834$3(DE-588)4171171-3$aNarrative Exegese$2gnd 606 $aRELIGION / Biblical Studies / New Testament$2bisacsh 610 $aAncient Rhetoric. 610 $aGospel of John. 610 $aHistory of Interpretation. 610 $aProgymnasmata. 610 $aTwo-Level Drama. 615 7$aNarrative Exegese 615 7$aRELIGION / Biblical Studies / New Testament. 676 $a226.5/06 686 $aBC 7250$2rvk 700 $aWright$b William M.$cIV.$0133695 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780738303321 996 $aRhetoric and theology$93703652 997 $aUNINA LEADER 08375nam 2200697 450 001 9910828587003321 005 20230129050850.0 010 $a1-4426-3088-4 010 $a1-4426-3087-6 024 7 $a10.3138/9781442630871 035 $a(CKB)3710000000540498 035 $a(EBL)4392990 035 $a(OCoLC)933438967 035 $a(OOCEL)451092 035 $a(OCoLC)946889071 035 $a(CaBNVSL)kck00236543 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4669897 035 $a(DE-B1597)479211 035 $a(OCoLC)979781134 035 $a(DE-B1597)9781442630871 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4669897 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11256411 035 $a(OCoLC)933433618 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_107265 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000540498 100 $a20160915h20152015 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 00$aCanadian annual review of politics and public affairs 2009 /$fedited by David Mutimer 210 1$aToronto, [Ontario] ;$aBuffalo, [New York] ;$aLondon, [England] :$cUniversity of Toronto Press,$d2015. 210 4$d©2015 215 $a1 online resource (337 p.) 225 0 $aCanadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs 300 $aIncludes index. 311 $a1-4426-3086-8 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and indexes. 327 $aCover -- Contents -- Contributors -- Canadian Calendar -- Editor's introduction -- the year in review -- Parliament and politics -- PARTISAN DYNAMICS -- Prorogation crisis I: with a whimper, not a bang -- September confidence vote: the NDP takes a pass -- Prorogation crisis II: the sequel -- NATIONAL INSTITUTIONS -- Speech from the Throne -- Cabinet -- Senate appointments -- By-election -- First Ministers' conference -- Mr Obama calls -- Electoral legislation -- OPPOSITION POLITICAL PARTIES -- The Liberals and the ignominy of Michael Ignatieff -- Whither the NDP? -- The Greens -- The Bloc and separatism -- Auditor General's reports -- NATIONAL ECONOMY -- Leading economic indicators -- Budget 2009: lighter, later, lifting -- Employment insurance -- Autumn fiscal update -- Bailouts for automakers ... and for bankers? -- CN Rail strike -- MAJOR POLICY AREAS -- Afghanistan -- Justice -- Crime and punishment -- Bodily samples and the response to R v.
