Leta E. Miller draws on primary source material and first-hand knowledge of the music to argue that a utopian vision counterbalanced partisan interests and inspired cultural endeavors, including the San Francisco Conservatory, two world fairs, and America's first municipally owned opera house. Miller demonstrates that rampant racism, initially directed against Chinese laborers (and their music), reappeared during the 1930's in the guise of labor unrest as WPA music activities exploded in vicious battles between administrators and artists, and African American and white jazz musicians competed for jobs in nightclubs. 410 0$aCA studies in 20th-century music ;$v13. 606 $aMusic$xPolitical aspects$zCalifornia$zSan Francisco$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aMusic$xSocial aspects$zCalifornia$zSan Francisco$xHistory$y20th century 610 $a1930s california. 610 $a20th century america. 610 $a20th century music. 610 $aamerican music history. 610 $aasian americans. 610 $aasian music. 610 $acalifornia history. 610 $acalifornia politics. 610 $achinese immigration. 610 $achinese opera. 610 $aclassical music. 610 $agreat depression. 610 $ahistory of jazz. 610 $ahistory of opera. 610 $ahistory. 610 $alive arts. 610 $amusic and racism. 610 $amusic and segregation. 610 $amusic history and criticism. 610 $amusic. 610 $anight club jazz. 610 $aphilharmonic. 610 $arealistic. 610 $asan francisco symphony. 610 $asan franciscos fairs. 610 $aus history. 610 $awest coast history. 610 $awest coast music. 610 $awwii america. 610 $awwii music. 615 0$aMusic$xPolitical aspects$xHistory 615 0$aMusic$xSocial aspects$xHistory 676 $a780.9794/6109041 700 $aMiller$b Leta E$0898341 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910828309703321 996 $aMusic and politics in San Francisco$94100761 997 $aUNINA
