It traces its exposition in the early eastern Christian tradition, through detailed analysis of Greek and Syriac texts by Klimakos, Ephrem, Isaac and Symeon the New Theologian. It suggests why such weeping is, for these writers, a joyful as well as a sobering experience, and it places their writings in their historical and geographical context, giving some lexicographical background. Issues of religious anthropology, and the unusual choice of a female exegete in the person of the 'sinful woman' (Luke 7.36-50) are considered. The conclusion points the way to an appropriate theological interpretation of these teachings and highlights modern, non-monastic examples of joy-bearing, penitent grief. 410 0$aMedieval Mediterranean ;$vv. 57. 606 $aRepentance$xChristianity$xHistory of doctrines 606 $aCrying$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory of doctrines 606 $aFathers of the church, Syriac 606 $aFathers of the church, Greek 615 0$aRepentance$xChristianity$xHistory of doctrines. 615 0$aCrying$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory of doctrines. 615 0$aFathers of the church, Syriac. 615 0$aFathers of the church, Greek. 676 $a234/.5 700 $aHunt$b Hannah$01615474 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910828301203321 996 $aJoy-bearing Grief$94046463 997 $aUNINA
