It investigates the ways in which new suburban class and gender identities were forged through the architecture, design and decoration of the home, in choices such as ebony elephants placed on mantelpieces and modern Easiwork dressers in kitchens. Ultimately, it argues that a specifically suburban modernism emerged, which looked backwards to the past whilst looking forward to the future. Thus the inter-war 'ideal' home was both a retreat from the outside world and a site of change and experimentation. The book also examines how the interwar home is lived in today. It will appeal to academics and students in design, social and cultural history as well as a wider readership curious about interwar homes. 606 $aArchitecture, Domestic$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y20th century 610 $aDomestic design. 610 $aDomesticity. 610 $aHome. 610 $aIdeal home. 610 $aInterior decoration. 610 $aModernity. 610 $aSuburban modernism. 610 $aSuburbia. 610 $aarchitecture. 610 $acultural history. 610 $adecoration. 610 $adesign. 610 $ahomeownership. 610 $ainterwar homes. 610 $ainterwar. 610 $amodernism. 610 $anostalgia. 610 $asocial history. 610 $asuburban. 615 0$aArchitecture, Domestic$xHistory 676 $a728.0942 700 $aRyan$b Deborah S.$01659534 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910827919803321 996 $aIdeal homes, 1918-39$94014233 997 $aUNINA
