Based on heretofore unexplored sources, this book examines a pivotal figure from this period: the scholar, mystic, statesman, and eponym of one of the earliest ?ar?qa lineages, ?Umar al-Suhraward?. In situating Suhraward??s life work in its social, political, and religious contexts, this book suggests that his universalizing Sufi system was not only enmeshed within a broader economy of Muslim religious learning, but also furnished social spaces which allowed for novel modes of participation in Sufi religiosity. In doing so, this book provides a framework for understanding the increasingly ubiquitous presence of intentional Sufi communities and institutions throughout the late-medieval Islamic world. 410 0$aIslamic history and civilization ;$vv. 71. 606 $aSuhrawardi?yah 606 $aSufism$xHistory 615 0$aSuhrawardi?yah. 615 0$aSufism$xHistory. 676 $a297.4/8 700 $aOhlander$b Erik S$01595773 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910827495903321 996 $aSufism in an age of transition$94104893 997 $aUNINA
