I. Thinking the Holocaust -- pt. II. Thresholds and Limits of History. 330 $aAlon Confino seeks to rethink dominant interpretations of the Holocaust by examining it as a problem in cultural history. As the main research interests of Holocaust scholars are frequently covered terrain - the anti-Semitic ideological campaign, the machinery of killing, the brutal massacres during the war - Confino's research goes in a new direction. He analyzes the culture and sensibilities that made it possible for the Nazis and other Germans to imagine the making of a world without Jews. Confino seeks these insights from the ways historians interpreted another short, violent and foundational event in modern European history - the French Revolution. The comparison of the ways we understand the Holocaust with scholars' interpretations of the French Revolution allows Confino to question some of the basic assumptions of present-day historians concerning historical narration, explanation and understanding. 606 $aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)$xCauses 606 $aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)$xHistoriography 606 $aNational socialism$xMoral and ethical aspects 606 $aAntisemitism$zGermany$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aGermany$xHistory$y1933-1945 607 $aGermany$xEthnic relations$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aGermany$xPolitics and government$y1933-1945 615 0$aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)$xCauses. 615 0$aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)$xHistoriography. 615 0$aNational socialism$xMoral and ethical aspects. 615 0$aAntisemitism$xHistory 676 $a940.53/18 686 $aHIS010000$2bisacsh 700 $aConfino$b Alon$01665726 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910827207303321 996 $aFoundational pasts$94043259 997 $aUNINA
