Taking into account 8 overall indicators and 28 sub-indicators, it looks at how India is performing on various aspects, including sex ratio, women's education, employment, health, political participation and representation; and prevention of crimes against women. Unlike previous attempts, this book examines the change in India's performance over a 15-year period, compares the situation of women in India to that in its neighborhood and internationally, and rates each Indian state and union territory individually. The findings in this book are both provocative and incentivizing for policymakers--they show that where the central and state governments share concerns India's performance on gender has improved, but where they diverge women's condition has deteriorated even further. 606 $aWomen$zIndia$xSocial conditions 606 $aWomen$zIndia$xSocial conditions$vStatistics 606 $aWomen in development$zIndia 606 $aWomen in development$zIndia$vStatistics 607 $aIndia$2fast 608 $aStatistics.$2fast 615 0$aWomen$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aWomen$xSocial conditions 615 0$aWomen in development 615 0$aWomen in development 676 $a305.420954 700 $aKumar$b Radha$01656623 702 $aKorff$b Marcel 702 $aSudhir$b Karthika 801 0$bCaToSAGE 801 1$bCaToSAGE 801 2$bUtOrBLW 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910827164203321 996 $aA gender atlas of India$94009627 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02704nam 22006013u 450 001 9910818809703321 005 20240401193856.0 010 $a0-203-70743-5 010 $a1-299-47790-9 010 $a1-135-02486-3 035 $a(CKB)2550000001019993 035 $a(EBL)1433610 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000905886 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11490185 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000905886 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10926393 035 $a(PQKB)11156251 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1433610 035 $a(OCoLC)842264631 035 $a(FINmELB)ELB132779 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000001019993 100 $a20131007d2013|||| u|| | 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aMetromarxism $eA Marxist Tale of the City 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aHoboken $cTaylor and Francis$d2013 210 1$aNew York :$cRoutledge,$d2002 215 $a1 online resource (213 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a0-415-93348-X 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (pages 185-205) and index. 327 $aCover; Metromarxism; Title Page; Copyright Page; Table of Contents; Acknowledgments; Introduction; 1 Commodities and Cities, with Sober Senses; 2 Backstreet Boy in Manchester; 3 The City of Profane Illumination; 4 The Urban Revolution; 5 The City of Marx and Coca-Cola; 6 The City of Althusser and Social Movements; 7 The Geopolitics of Urbanization; 8 A Marxist Urban Romance; Afterword; Notes; Index 330 $a""Metromarxism"" discusses Marxism's relationship with the city from the 1850s to the present by way of biographical chapters on figures from the Marxist tradition, including Marx, Walter Benjamin, Guy Debord, and David Harvey. Each chapter combines interesting biographical anecdotes with an accessible analysis of each individual's contribution to an always-transforming Marxist theory of the city. He suggests that the interplay between the city as center of economic and social life and its potential for progressive change generated a major corpus of work.
