A crucial element in the thought of the third-century CE philosopher Plotinus-his conception of mystical union with the One-cannot be understood solely within the conventional history of philosophy, or as the product of a unique, sui generis psychological propensity. This monograph demonstrates that Plotinus tacitly patterned his mystical ascent to the One on a type of visionary ascent ritual that is first attested in Gnostic sources. These sources include the Platonizing Sethian tractates Zostrianos (NHC VIII,1) and Allogenes (NHC XI,3) of which we have Coptic translations from Nag Hammadi and whose Greek Vorlagen were known to have been read in Plotinus's school. 410 0$aNag Hammadi and Manichaean studies ;$vVolume 98. 606 $aPlatonists 606 $aNeoplatonism 606 $aSethians 606 $aMysticism 606 $aOne (The One in philosophy) 615 0$aPlatonists. 615 0$aNeoplatonism. 615 0$aSethians. 615 0$aMysticism. 615 0$aOne (The One in philosophy) 676 $a186.4 700 $aMazur$b Zeke$01690508 702 $aBurns$b Dylan M. 702 $aCorrigan$b Kevin 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910827144103321 996 $aThe Platonizing Sethian background of Plotinus's mysticism$94066224 997 $aUNINA
