The authors have made extensive use of the NRAO Archives, which contain an unparalleled collection of documents pertaining to the history of radio astronomy, including the institutional records of NRAO as well as the personal papers of many of the pioneers of U.S. radio astronomy. Technical details and extensive citations to original sources are given in notes for the more technical readers, but are not required for an understanding of the body of the book. This book is intended for an audience ranging from interested lay readers to professional researchers studying the scientific, technical, political, and cultural development of a new science, and how it changed the course of 20th century astronomy. 410 0$aHistorical & Cultural Astronomy,$x2509-310X 606 $aObservations, Astronomical 606 $aAstronomy?Observations 606 $aPhysics 606 $aHistory 606 $aAstronomy, Observations and Techniques$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/P22014 606 $aHistory and Philosophical Foundations of Physics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/P29000 606 $aHistory of Science$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/731000 610 $aAstronomy, Observations and Techniques 610 $aHistory and Philosophical Foundations of Physics 610 $aHistory of Science 610 $aPhilosophical Foundations of Physics and Astronomy 610 $aRadio Astronomy in the USA 610 $aNRAO 610 $aRadio astronomers 610 $aSETI 610 $aSearch for extraterrestrial intelligence 610 $aRadio astronomy politics and culture 610 $aRadio telescope construction 610 $aopen access 610 $aAstronomy, space & time 615 0$aObservations, Astronomical. 615 0$aAstronomy?Observations. 615 0$aPhysics. 615 0$aHistory. 615 14$aAstronomy, Observations and Techniques. 615 24$aHistory and Philosophical Foundations of Physics. 615 24$aHistory of Science. 676 $a520 700 $aKellermann$b Kenneth I$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0843490 702 $aBouton$b E$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 702 $aBrandt$b Sierra S$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996418169503316 996 $aOpen Skies$91886070 997 $aUNISA LEADER 04572nam 2200997 450 001 9910826958003321 005 20230807212618.0 010 $a0-520-28423-2 010 $a0-520-95986-8 024 7 $a10.1525/9780520959866 035 $a(CKB)3710000000346547 035 $a(EBL)1775221 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001420999 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12611374 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001420999 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11404498 035 $a(PQKB)11644621 035 $a(StDuBDS)EDZ0001193114 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1775221 035 $a(OCoLC)902724771 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse47162 035 $a(DE-B1597)520554 035 $a(DE-B1597)9780520959866 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1775221 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11015003 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL719011 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000346547 100 $a20150211h20152015 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|nu---|u||u 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aDemocracy as death $ethe moral order of anti-liberal politics in South Africa /$fJason Hickel 210 1$aOakland, California :$cUniversity of California Press,$d2015. 210 4$dİ2015 215 $a1 online resource (282 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 0 $a0-520-28422-4 311 0 $a1-322-87729-7 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $tFront matter --$tContents --$tIllustrations --$tAcknowledgments --$tA Note on Translation and Transcription --$tAbbreviations --$tINTRODUCTION. This anti-democracy stance, which persists today as a direct critique of "freedom" in neoliberal South Africa, hinges on an idealized vision of the rural home and a hierarchical social order crafted in part by the technologies of colonial governance over the past century. In analyzing this conflict, Jason Hickel contributes to broad theoretical debates about liberalism and democratization in the postcolonial world. Democracy as Death interrogates the Western ideals of individual freedom and agency from the perspective of those who oppose such ideals, and questions the assumptions underpinning theories of anti-liberal movements. The book argues that both democracy and the political science that attempts to explain resistance to it presuppose a model of personhood native to Western capitalism, which may not operate cross-culturally. 606 $aDemocracy$zSouth Africa 607 $aSouth Africa$xPolitics and government$y1994- 610 $aafrican history. 610 $aafrican national congress. 610 $aanc. 610 $aanti democracy stance. 610 $acolonial governance. 610 $acolonialism. 610 $acultural studies. 610 $ademocratization. 610 $adiplomacy. 610 $aegalitarian values. 610 $afreedom. 610 $agovernment and governing. 610 $ahierarchical social order. 610 $ahistorical. 610 $aindividual freedom. 610 $ainternal conflict. 610 $aliberal democratic platform. 610 $aliberalism. 610 $amigrant workers. 610 $amigrants. 610 $aneoliberal south africa. 610 $apostcolonial studies. 610 $arevolution. 610 $arural home. 610 $arural zuzuland. 610 $arural. 610 $asouth africa. 610 $asouth african history. 610 $awestern capitalism. 610 $awestern ideals. 615 0$aDemocracy 676 $a320.968 686 $aMI 65086$2rvk 700 $aHickel$b Jason$f1982-$0761729 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910826958003321 996 $aDemocracy as death$93958631 997 $aUNINA
