Conclusion --$tReferences --$tIndex 330 $aThroughout the world, politicians are dismantling state enterprises and heaping praise on private markets, while in the United States a new rhetoric of "citizen empowerment" links a widespread distrust of government to decentralization and privatization. Here Joel Handler asks whether this restructuring of authority really allows ordinary citizens to take more control of the things that matter in their roles as parents and children, teachers and students, tenants and owners, producers and consumers. Looking at citizens as stakeholders in the modern social welfare state created by the New Deal, he traces the surprising ideological shifts of empowerment from its beginning as a cornerstone of the war on poverty in the 1960's to its central place in conservative market-based voucher schemes for school reform in the 1990's.Handler shows that in the past the gains from decentralization have proved to be more symbol than substance: some disadvantaged members of society will find new opportunities in the changes of the 1990's, but others will simply experience powerlessness under another name. He carefully distinguishes "empowerment by invitation" (in special education, worker safety, home health care, public housing tenancy, and neighborhood organizations) from the "empowerment by conflict" exemplified by the radical decentralization of the Chicago public schools. What emerges is a map of the major pitfalls and possible successes in the current journey away from a discredited regulatory state. 606 $aDecentralization in government$zUnited States 606 $aCommunity power$zUnited States 606 $aPower (Social sciences)$zUnited States 606 $aPrivatization$zUnited States 606 $aDecentralization in government 606 $aWelfare state 606 $aSchools$xDecentralization$zIllinois$zChicago 607 $aUnited States$xPolitics and government$y20th century 615 0$aDecentralization in government 615 0$aCommunity power 615 0$aPower (Social sciences) 615 0$aPrivatization 615 0$aDecentralization in government. 615 0$aWelfare state. 615 0$aSchools$xDecentralization 676 $a350/.000973 700 $aHandler$b Joel F$0287878 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780055803321 996 $aDown from bureaucracy$93674516 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03220nam 2200565 450 001 9910826937003321 005 20230807221159.0 010 $a90-04-30291-3 024 7 $a10.1163/9789004302914 035 $a(CKB)3710000000452252 035 $a(EBL)2110737 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001517991 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12621498 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001517991 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11524418 035 $a(PQKB)11100463 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC2110737 035 $a(OCoLC)914709912$z(OCoLC)915311614 035 $a(nllekb)BRILL9789004302914 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000452252 100 $a20150804h20152015 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 14$aThe very idea of organization $esocial ontology today : Kantian and Hegelian reconsiderations /$fby Christian H. It takes as its starting point a debate in organization studies about the foundations of organizational research. This debate, however, is running into difficulties regarding the basic concept of the reality that organization studies deal with, that is regarding the ontology of organization. A convincing organizational ontology is not in sight. Therefore, Krijnen introduces a new meta-perspective, offering a more comprehensive and more fundamental social ontology in general as well as an organizational ontology in particular. Exploring the Kantian and Hegelian tradition of philosophy, he convincingly shows that a rejuvenated type of German idealism contains intriguing possibilities for developing a present-day social and organizational philosophy. 410 0$aCritical studies in German idealism ;$vVolume 16. 606 $aOrganizational sociology$xPhilosophy 606 $aOntology 615 0$aOrganizational sociology$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aOntology. 676 $a302.3/501 700 $aKrijnen$b Christian$01717225 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910826937003321 996 $aThe very idea of organization$94113197 997 $aUNINA
