During this time, known as haskalah, or the Anglo-Jewish Enlightenment, Jewish women in England became the first Jewish women anywhere to publish novels, histories, periodicals, theological tracts, and conduct manuals. The Origin of the Modern Jewish Woman Writer analyzes this critical but forgotten period in the development of Jewish women's writing in relation to Victorian literary history, women's cultural history, and Jewish cultural history. Michael Galchinsky demonstrates that these women writers were the most widely recognized spokespersons for the haskalah. Their romances, some of which sold as well as novels by Dickens, argued for Jew's emancipation in the Victorian world and women's emancipation in the Jewish world. 606 $aJews in literature 606 $aJudaism in literature 606 $aJewish women in literature 606 $aJudaism and literature$zGreat Britain 606 $aJews$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aJewish women$zGreat Britain$xIntellectual life 606 $aJudaism$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aEnglish literature$y19th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEnglish literature$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism 606 $aWomen and literature$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aEnglish literature$xJewish authors$xHistory and criticism 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aJews in literature. 615 0$aJudaism in literature. 615 0$aJewish women in literature. 615 0$aJudaism and literature 615 0$aJews$xHistory 615 0$aJewish women$xIntellectual life. 615 0$aJudaism$xHistory 615 0$aEnglish literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEnglish literature$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aWomen and literature$xHistory 615 0$aEnglish literature$xJewish authors$xHistory and criticism. 676 $a823/.8099287/089924 700 $aGalchinsky$b Michael$0645018 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910524708103321 996 $aThe Origin of the Modern Jewish Woman Writer$92784205 997 $aUNINA
