By exploring the motivations for Christian interest in Yiddish, and the differing ways in which Yiddish was discussed and treated in Christian texts, A Goy Who Speaks Yiddish addresses a wide array of issues, most notably Christian Hebraism, Protestant theology, early modern Yiddish culture, and the social and cultural history of language in early modern Europe. Elyada's analysis of a wide range of philological and theological works, as well as textbooks, dictionaries, ethnographical writings, and translations, demonstrates that Christian Yiddishism had implications beyond its purely linguistic and philological dimensions. Indeed, Christian texts on Yiddish reveal not only the ways in which Christians perceived and defined Jews and Judaism, but also, in a contrasting vein, how they viewed their own language, religion, and culture. 410 0$aStanford studies in Jewish history and culture.. 606 $aChristian literature, German$xHistory and criticism 606 $aChristian scholars$zGermany$xHistory 606 $aChristianity and other religions$xJudaism 606 $aJudaism$xRelations$xChristianity 606 $aYiddish language in literature 606 $aYiddish language$xStudy and teaching$zGermany$xHistory 606 $aYiddish literature$xStudy and teaching$zGermany$xHistory 615 0$aChristian literature, German$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aChristian scholars$xHistory. 615 0$aChristianity and other religions$xJudaism. 615 0$aJudaism$xRelations$xChristianity. 615 0$aYiddish language in literature. 615 0$aYiddish language$xStudy and teaching$xHistory. 615 0$aYiddish literature$xStudy and teaching$xHistory. 676 $a439/.10882743 700 $aElyada$b Aya$f1977-$01718709 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910826487703321 996 $aA goy who speaks Yiddish$94115867 997 $aUNINA
