Every reuse of a preexisting recording is, on some level, a misuse in that it was not intended or at least anticipated by the original maker, but not all misuses are necessarily unethical. In fact, there are many instances of productive misuse that seem justified. At the same time, there are other instances in which the misuse shades into abuse. Documentary scholars have long engaged with the question of the ethical responsibility of documentary makers in relation to their subjects. But what happens when this responsibility is set at a remove, when the recording already exists for the taking and repurposing? Reuse, Misuse and Abuse surveys a range of contemporary films and videos that appropriate preexisting footage and attempts to theorize their ethical implications. 606 $aActualities (Motion pictures) 606 $aActualities (Motion pictures) 606 $aDocumentary films$xMoral and ethical aspects 606 $aGaze in motion pictures 606 $aStock footage 606 $aVideo recordings$xMoral and ethical aspects 606 $aSOCIAL SCIENCE / General$2bisacsh 610 $aAudio, Audiovisual, Contemporary, Culture, Digital Era, Documentary, Ethics, Films, Recording, Scholars, Videos, Visual, Footage, People, Life, Events, Originality, Content, Reuse, Gas, Intimate Traces. 615 0$aActualities (Motion pictures) 615 0$aActualities (Motion pictures). 615 0$aDocumentary films$xMoral and ethical aspects. 615 0$aGaze in motion pictures. 615 0$aStock footage. 615 0$aVideo recordings$xMoral and ethical aspects. 615 7$aSOCIAL SCIENCE / General. 676 $a070.1/95 700 $aBaron$b Jaimie, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01615911 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910826471403321 996 $aReuse, Misuse, Abuse$93946339 997 $aUNINA
