CONCLUSIONS""; ""REFERENCES"" 330 3 $aIntermediation spreads in Latin America are high by international standards. This paper examines the determinants of bank interest margins in that region using bank and country-level data from 85 countries, including 14 Latin American economies. The results suggest that Latin America has higher interest rates, less efficient banks, and larger reserve requirements than other regions and that these factors have a significant impact on spreads. However, Latin American countries do not differ markedly from their peers in other aspects that are found important in determining the cost of financial intermediation, such as inflation and bank profit taxation. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/044 606 $aBanks and banking$zLatin America 606 $aInterest rates$zLatin America 606 $aBanking$2imf 606 $aBanks and Banking$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking$2imf 606 $aBanks$2imf 606 $aCaribbean$2imf 606 $aCompetition$2imf 606 $aDeposit rates$2imf 606 $aDepository Institutions$2imf 606 $aEconomywide Country Studies: Latin America$2imf 606 $aEmerging and frontier financial markets$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aFinancial Markets and the Macroeconomy$2imf 606 $aFinancial markets$2imf 606 $aFinancial services industry$2imf 606 $aFinancial services$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aInterest rates$2imf 606 $aInterest Rates: Determination, Term Structure, and Effects$2imf 606 $aLegal support in revenue administration$2imf 606 $aMicro Finance Institutions$2imf 606 $aMonetary economics$2imf 606 $aMonetary Policy$2imf 606 $aMonetary policy$2imf 606 $aMoney and Monetary Policy$2imf 606 $aMortgages$2imf 606 $aPublic finance & taxation$2imf 606 $aPublic Finance$2imf 606 $aReserve requirements$2imf 606 $aRevenue administration$2imf 606 $aRevenue$2imf 606 $aTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: General$2imf 607 $aBrazil$2imf 615 0$aBanks and banking 615 0$aInterest rates 615 7$aBanking 615 7$aBanks and Banking 615 7$aBanks and banking 615 7$aBanks 615 7$aCaribbean 615 7$aCompetition 615 7$aDeposit rates 615 7$aDepository Institutions 615 7$aEconomywide Country Studies: Latin America 615 7$aEmerging and frontier financial markets 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aFinancial Markets and the Macroeconomy 615 7$aFinancial markets 615 7$aFinancial services industry 615 7$aFinancial services 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aInterest rates 615 7$aInterest Rates: Determination, Term Structure, and Effects 615 7$aLegal support in revenue administration 615 7$aMicro Finance Institutions 615 7$aMonetary economics 615 7$aMonetary Policy 615 7$aMonetary policy 615 7$aMoney and Monetary Policy 615 7$aMortgages 615 7$aPublic finance & taxation 615 7$aPublic Finance 615 7$aReserve requirements 615 7$aRevenue administration 615 7$aRevenue 615 7$aTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: General 700 $aGelos$b Gaston$01624135 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bWestern Hemisphere Dept. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910826313403321 996 $aBanking Spreads in Latin America$94025928 997 $aUNINA
