However, this pathbreaking study reveals that Moroccan Islam was actually invented in the early twentieth century by French ethnographers and colonial officers who were influenced by British colonial practices in India. Between 1900 and 1920, these researchers compiled a social inventory of Morocco that in turn led to the emergence of a new object of study, Moroccan Islam, and a new field, Moroccan studies. In the process, they resurrected the monarchy and reinvented Morocco as a modern polity. This is an important contribution for scholars and readers interested in questions of orientalism and empire, colonialism and modernity, and the invention of traditions. 410 0$aFletcher Jones Foundation humanities imprint. 606 $aIslam and state$zMorocco$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aIslam$zMorocco 606 $aFrench$zMorocco$xIntellectual life 607 $aMorocco$xHistory$y1912-1956 607 $aFrance$xColonies$zAfrica, North$xReligion 607 $aMorocco$xReligious life and customs 610 $aafrican history. 610 $abritish colonialism. 610 $abritish imperialism. 610 $acolonial officers. 610 $acolonial policies. 610 $acolonialism. 610 $aearly 20th century history. 610 $aempire. 610 $aeuropean colonialism. 610 $afrench colonialism. 610 $afrench ethnographers. 610 $afrench imperialism. 610 $aindia. 610 $ainvention of traditions. 610 $aislam. 610 $amission scientifique du maroc. 610 $amodern polity. 610 $amodernity. 610 $amonarchy. 610 $amoroccan islam. 610 $amoroccan studies. 610 $amorocco. 610 $amuslim countries. 610 $amuslim. 610 $anational form of islam. 610 $anorth african history. 610 $aorientalism. 610 $apolitical. 610 $areligion. 610 $areligious studies. 610 $astate formation. 615 0$aIslam and state$xHistory 615 0$aIslam 615 0$aFrench$xIntellectual life. 676 $a964.04 686 $aLB 26475$2rvk 700 $aBurke$b Edmund$f1940-$0137333 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910826189303321 996 $aThe ethnographic state$94113749 997 $aUNINA
