For most of East Asia, Buddhist sutras were written in classical Chinese and inaccessible to many devotees. How, then, did such devotees access these texts? Charlotte D. Eubanks argues that the medieval genre of "explanatory tales" illuminates the link between human body (devotee) and sacred text (sutra). Her highly original approach to understanding Buddhist textuality focuses on the sensual aspects of religious experience and also looks beyond Japan to explore pre-modern book history, practices of preaching, miracles of reading, and the Mahayana Buddhist "cult of the book." 410 0$aBuddhisms. 606 $aBooks and reading$xReligious aspects$xBuddhism 606 $aBuddhism$zJapan$xHistory$y1185-1600 606 $aBuddhist literature, Japanese$xHistory and criticism 606 $aFolk literature, Japanese$xHistory and criticism 606 $aMovement, Psychology of$xReligious aspects$xBuddhism 610 $aaffect theory. 610 $aamida. 610 $abodhisattvas. 610 $abook history. 610 $abuddha. 610 $abuddhism. 610 $abuddhist texts. 610 $achina. 610 $acult of the book. 610 $adharma. 610 $aeast asia. 610 $aembodiment. 610 $aexplanatory tales. 610 $ahistory of the book. 610 $aindian scriptures. 610 $ajapan. 610 $ajapanese didactic tales. 610 $amahayana buddhism. 610 $amateriality. 610 $amedieval japan. 610 $amemory. 610 $amiracles. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $apopular religion. 610 $apreaching. 610 $areligion. 610 $areligious texts. 610 $asacred literature. 610 $asacred texts. 610 $ascroll. 610 $asermons. 610 $asetsuwa. 610 $aspirituality. 610 $asutra recitations. 610 $asutra. 610 $atextual culture. 610 $atransubstantiation. 615 0$aBooks and reading$xReligious aspects$xBuddhism. 615 0$aBuddhism$xHistory 615 0$aBuddhist literature, Japanese$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aFolk literature, Japanese$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aMovement, Psychology of$xReligious aspects$xBuddhism. 676 $a294.3/85 700 $aEubanks$b Charlotte D$g(Charlotte Diane),$f1971-$01661108 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910826173903321 996 $aMiracles of book and body$94016834 997 $aUNINA
