Since the book was published in 1977, and much new material has appeared in print in the intervening thirty-four years, a new Introduction is called for. It will describe the favorable circumstances in which I came to research its contents, re-state the book's main propositions, review them in the light of the scholarly studies which bear on these topics, and update and carry them forward with the assistance of other authors and through my own later research and publications. 410 0$aEchoes: Classics of Hong Kong Culture and History 606 $aSocial institutions$zChina$zHong Kong 607 $aHong Kong (China)$xSocial conditions 615 0$aSocial institutions 676 $a307/.095125 700 $aHayes$b James$f1930-$01672621 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910825892103321 996 $aThe Hong Kong region, 1850-1911$94120355 997 $aUNINA
