This locale fixation brought the Black Country town into the national spotlight, yet Powell's unstable relationship with Wolverhampton has since been overlooked. Drawing from interviews and archival material, this book offers a rich local history through which to investigate the speech, bringing to life the racialised dynamics of space during a critical moment in British history. It traces the ways in which Powell's words reinvented the town, uncovering highly contested local responses. While Powell left Wolverhampton in 1974, the book returns to the area to explore the collective memories of Powell which continue to reverberate. 410 0$aRacism, resistance and social change. 606 $aHistory$2ukslc 606 $aInfluence (Literary, artistic, etc.)$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00972484 606 $aEmigration and immigration$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00908690 606 $aCollective memory$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01739814 606 $aHistory$2eflch 606 $aBIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY$xPolitical$2bisacsh 606 $aCollective memory$zEngland$zWolverhampton 607 $aGreat Britain$2fast 607 $aEngland$zWolverhampton$2fast 607 $aGreat Britain$xEmigration and immigration$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aWolverhampton (England)$xHistory$y20th century 608 $aHistory. 610 $aBritish history. 610 $aclass. 610 $aimmigration. 610 $aresistance. 615 7$aHistory. 615 7$aInfluence (Literary, artistic, etc.) 615 7$aEmigration and immigration. 615 7$aCollective memory. 615 7$aHistory. 615 7$aBIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY$xPolitical. 615 0$aCollective memory 676 $a909 700 $aHirsch$b Shirin$01598376 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910825863503321 996 $aIn the shadow of Enoch Powell$93920577 997 $aUNINA
