The volume interrogates received narratives of warfare that identify the development of modern 'total' war with the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and instead considers the continuities and transformations in warfare over the course of two hundred years. The contributors examine prisoners of war, the cultures of plunder, the tensions of billeting, and war-time atrocities throughout England, France, Spain, and the German territories. They also explore the legal practices surrounding the conduct and aftermath of war; representations of civilians, soldiers, and militias; and the philosophical underpinnings of warfare. They probe what it meant to be a civilian in territories beset by invasion and civil war or in times when 'peace' at home was accompanied by almost continuous military engagement abroad. Their accounts show us civilians not only as anguished sufferers, but also directly involved with war: fighting back with shocking violence, profiting from war-time needs, and negotiating for material and social redress. And they show us individuals and societies coming to terms with the moral and political challenges posed by the business of drawing lines between 'civilians' and 'soldiers'.With contributors drawn from the fields of political and legal theory, literature and the visual arts, and military, political, social, and cultural history, this volume will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of warfare and the evolution of the idea of the civilian. 410 0$aEighteenth-century worlds. 606 $aCivilians in war$zEurope$xHistory$y17th century$vCongresses 606 $aCivilians in war$zEurope$xHistory$y18th century$vCongresses 606 $aWar and society$zEurope$xHistory$y17th century$vCongresses 606 $aWar and society$zEurope$xHistory$y18th century$vCongresses 607 $aEurope$xHistory, Military$y17th century$vCongresses 607 $aEurope$xHistory, Military$y18th century$vCongresses 607 $aEurope$xSocial conditions$y17th century$vCongresses 607 $aEurope$xSocial conditions$y18th century$vCongresses 615 0$aCivilians in war$xHistory 615 0$aCivilians in war$xHistory 615 0$aWar and society$xHistory 615 0$aWar and society$xHistory 676 $a305.906950940903 702 $aCharters$b Erica 702 $aRosenhaft$b Eve$f1951- 702 $aSmith$b Hannah$f1976- 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910825478003321 996 $aCivilians and war in Europe, 1618-1815$93963136 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04028nam 2200733Ia 450 001 9911019953903321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a9786613679079 010 $a9781280768309 010 $a1280768304 010 $a9780470718742 010 $a0470718749 010 $a9780470716106 010 $a047071610X 035 $a(CKB)1000000000687606 035 $a(EBL)703721 035 $a(OCoLC)775867014 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000750408 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11401156 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000750408 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10749660 035 $a(PQKB)10805067 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC703721 035 $a(WaSeSS)Ind00046340 035 $a(Perlego)2776052 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000687606 100 $a20120308d1952 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aCiba Foundation Colloquia on Endocrinology$hVolume 1$iSteroid hormones and tumour growth and Steroid hormones and enzymes /$fgeneral editor for the Ciba Foundation, G.
