Drawing on a wide range of documents, including theological polemics on blood purity, political treatises, manuals on animal husbandry, historiography, paintings, epic poems, and Spanish ballads, Javier Irigoyen-Garca argues that the figure of the shepherd takes on extraordinary importance in the reshaping of early modern Spanish identity. The Spanish Arcadia contextualizes pastoral romances within a broader framework and assesses how they inform other cultural manifestations. In doing so, Irigoyen-Garca provides incisive new ideas about the social and ethnocentric uses of the genre, as well as its interrelation with ideas of race, animal husbandry, and nation building in early modern Spain. 410 0$aToronto Iberic. 606 $aShepherds$zSpain$xSocial life and customs 606 $aSheepherding$zSpain$xHistory 606 $aPastoral systems$zSpain$xHistory 606 $aPastoral literature, Spanish$xHistory and criticism 606 $aSpanish literature$yClassical period, 1500-1700$xHistory and criticism 606 $aShepherds in literature 606 $aEthnology$zSpain$xHistory 607 $aSpain$xHistoriography 608 $aHistory. 608 $aCriticism, interpretation, etc. 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aShepherds$xSocial life and customs. 615 0$aSheepherding$xHistory. 615 0$aPastoral systems$xHistory. 615 0$aPastoral literature, Spanish$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aSpanish literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aShepherds in literature. 615 0$aEthnology$xHistory. 676 $a306.09460903 700 $aIrigoyen-Garci?a$b Javier$f1975-$0759072 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910825321803321 996 $aThe Spanish Arcadia$94070714 997 $aUNINA
