Drawing on Marxist-feminist literary theory, it closely analyses selected texts (published between 1953 and 2000), which reflect the effects of patriarchal culture and tradition on race, class, and gender relations in Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf region in general. It argues that the selected texts portray the pre-oil generations of Kuwaiti/Arabian Gulf women?born before or in the first half of the twentieth century?as resistant and/or revolutionary figures, contrary to the common notion of their stereotypical passivity and submissiveness. This book demonstrates how Kuwaiti women writers have used literature to work for, and contribute to, social change. 410 0$aWomen and gender, the Middle East and the Islamic world ;$vv. 8. 606 $aArabic fiction$zKuwait$xHistory and criticism 606 $aArabic fiction$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism 606 $aArabic fiction$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aWomen in literature 606 $aRace in literature 606 $aSocial classes in literature 606 $aSex role in literature 606 $aPatriarchy in literature 615 0$aArabic fiction$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aArabic fiction$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aArabic fiction$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aWomen in literature. 615 0$aRace in literature. 615 0$aSocial classes in literature. 615 0$aSex role in literature. 615 0$aPatriarchy in literature. 676 $a892.7/36099287095367 700 $aTijani$b Ishaq$01693933 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910824866603321 996 $aMale domination, female revolt$94072103 997 $aUNINA
