He employs a comparative analysis of early modern French imperialism, integrating three types of overseas possessions usually considered separately - the settlement colony (New France), the tropical monoculture colony (the French Windward Islands), and the early Enlightenment planned colony (Louisiana) - offering a work of synthesis that unites the historiographies and insights from three formerly separate historical literatures. Banks challenges the very notion that a concrete "empire" emerged by the first half of the eighteenth century; in fact, French colonies remained largely isolated arenas of action and development. Only with the contraction and concentration of overseas possessions after 1763 on the Plantation Complex did a more cohesive, if fleeting, French empire first emerge. 606 $aCommunication policy$zFrance$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aGovernment correspondence$zFrance$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aCommercial correspondence$zAmerica$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aTravelers' writings, French$xHistory and criticism 606 $aCommunication$xPolitique gouvernementale$zFrance$xHistoire$y18e siecle 606 $aCorrespondance administrative$zFrance$xHistoire$y18e siecle 606 $aCorrespondance commerciale$zAmerique$xHistoire$y18e siecle 606 $aEcrits de voyageurs francais$xHistoire et critique 607 $aFrance$xColonies$xAdministration$xHistory$y18th century 607 $aFrance$xColonies$zAmerica$xHistory$y18th century 607 $aFrance$xForeign relations$y1715-1774 607 $aFrance$xColonies$xAdministration$xHistoire$y18e siecle 607 $aFrance$xColonies$zAmerique$xHistoire$y18e siecle 607 $aFrance$xRelations exterieures$y1715-1774 615 0$aCommunication policy$xHistory 615 0$aGovernment correspondence$xHistory 615 0$aCommercial correspondence$xHistory 615 0$aTravelers' writings, French$xHistory and criticism. 615 6$aCommunication$xPolitique gouvernementale$xHistoire 615 6$aCorrespondance administrative$xHistoire 615 6$aCorrespondance commerciale$xHistoire 615 6$aEcrits de voyageurs francais$xHistoire et critique. 676 $a325/.32/094409033 700 $aBanks$b Kenneth J.$f1958-$01719959 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910824532303321 996 $aChasing empire across the sea$94118219 997 $aUNINA
