The impact of war, a human activity that is both public and politically charged, is examined as it affects private human lives caught up in public and political situations. The essays, many of them influenced by the burgeoning field of study in the history of emotions, examine the often unconsidered effects of war - on the individual and on the commune - as revealed in the study of well-known texts such as 'Beowulf', 'Piers Plowman', Malory's 'Le Morte Darthur', and Chaucer?s 'Troilus and Criseyde', as well as other lesser-known works that mirror the concerns of the society in which they were conceived. These latter range from the twelfth-century 'chansons' of the Crusades, through the fifteenth-century French and English political works of Alain Chartier, to the twentieth-century anti-war satirical films of Mario Monicelli. 410 0$aWar and conflict in premodern societies. 606 $aLiterature, Medieval$xHistory and criticism 606 $aWar in literature 606 $aLiterature, Medieval 610 $aWarfare. 610 $aemotion. 610 $agender. 610 $ahistory of emotions. 610 $amedieval literature. 610 $amedieval warfare. 610 $amedievalism. 610 $apremodern literature. 615 0$aLiterature, Medieval$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aWar in literature. 615 0$aLiterature, Medieval. 676 $a809.02 702 $aMcIlroy$b Claire Elizabeth$f1970- 702 $aScott$b Anne M. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910823907503321 996 $aLiterature, emotions, and pre-modern war$93964656 997 $aUNINA
