In Equality for Same-Sex Couples, Yuval Merin presents the first comparative study of the legal regulation of same-sex partnerships worldwide, as well as a unique survey of the status of same-sex couples in Europe. Merin begins by providing a historical overview of the transformation of marriage from antiquity to the present. He then identifies and critically compares four principal models for the legal regulation and recognition of same-sex partnerships: civil marriage, registered partnership, domestic partnership, and cohabitation. Merin concludes that all of the models except civil marriage discriminate against gays and lesbians just as the "separate but equal" doctrine discriminated against African Americans; thus, so-called alternatives to marriage, even if they provide the same rights and benefits as marriage, are inherently unequal and therefore unconstitutional. 606 $aSame-sex marriage$xLaw and legislation$zEurope 606 $aGay couples$xLegal status, laws, etc$zEurope 606 $aSame-sex marriage$xLaw and legislation$zUnited States 606 $aGay couples$xLegal status, laws, etc$zUnited States 610 $ahomosexual, partners, partnership, marriage, commitment, long term, relationships, love, romance, europe, united states, usa, america, american, western world, taboo, discrimination, equals, equity, justice, activism, social studies, culture, cultural, acceptance, rights, legal, litigation, regulations, civil, domestic, cohabitation, laws, international, sexuality. 615 0$aSame-sex marriage$xLaw and legislation 615 0$aGay couples$xLegal status, laws, etc. 615 0$aSame-sex marriage$xLaw and legislation 615 0$aGay couples$xLegal status, laws, etc. 676 $a342.087 676 $a346.401/6 676 $a346.4016 700 $aMerin$b Yuval$01660224 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910823727203321 996 $aEquality for same-sex couples$94015292 997 $aUNINA
