But in the nineteenth century, the degree of fraud and corruption in America approached that of today's most corrupt developing nations, as municipal governments and robber barons alike found new ways to steal from taxpayers and swindle investors. In Corruption and Reform, contributors explore this shadowy period of United States history in search of better methods to fight corruption worldwide today. Contributors to this volume address the measurement and consequences of fraud and corruption and the forces that ultimately led to their decline within the United States. They show that various approaches to reducing corruption have met with success, such as deregulation, particularly "free banking," in the 1830's. In the 1930's, corruption was kept in check when new federal bureaucracies replaced local administrations in doling out relief. Another deterrent to corruption was the independent press, which kept a watchful eye over government and business. These and other facets of American history analyzed in this volume make it indispensable as background for anyone interested in corruption today. 410 0$aNational Bureau of Economic Research conference report. 606 $aCorruption$zUnited States$xHistory$vCongresses 606 $aPolitical corruption$zUnited States$xHistory$vCongresses 606 $aCorporations$xCorrupt practices$zUnited States$xHistory$vCongresses 606 $aCorruption$zUnited States$xPrevention$xHistory$vCongresses 610 $acorrupt, reformer, change, economy, economics, finance, financial, wealth, income, money, history, historical, academic, scholarly, research, united states, usa, america, american, international, global, scandal, taboo, 19th, century, fraud, government, stealing, theft, taxpayer, investor, deregulation, banking, 1800s, 1900s, 20th, analysis, urban, laws, legal. 615 0$aCorruption$xHistory 615 0$aPolitical corruption$xHistory 615 0$aCorporations$xCorrupt practices$xHistory 615 0$aCorruption$xPrevention$xHistory 676 $a364.1/323/0973 701 $aGlaeser$b Edward L$g(Edward Ludwig),$f1967-$0324152 701 $aGoldin$b Claudia Dale$0128928 712 02$aNational Bureau of Economic Research. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910823233303321 996 $aCorruption and reform$94094460 997 $aUNINA
