Our analysis reveals considerable dissimilarities in the economic characteristics of the countries in west and central Africa. In particular, the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ) countries do not form a cluster with the West Africa Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) countries; and, within the WAMZ, there is a significant lack of homogeneity. Furthermore, when west and central African countries are considered together, we find significant heterogeneities within the CFA franc zone, and some interesting similarities between the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) and WAMZ countries. Overall, our findings raise some questions about the geographical boundaries of several existing and proposed monetary unions. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/090 606 $aMonetary unions$zAfrica, West$xEconometric models 606 $aMoney$zAfrica, West 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aForeign Exchange$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aFinancial Aspects of Economic Integration$2imf 606 $aEmpirical Studies of Trade$2imf 606 $aPrices, Business Fluctuations, and Cycles: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aCurrency$2imf 606 $aForeign exchange$2imf 606 $aEconomic growth$2imf 606 $aMonetary unions$2imf 606 $aTerms of trade$2imf 606 $aExchange rates$2imf 606 $aReal exchange rates$2imf 606 $aBusiness cycles$2imf 606 $aEconomic policy$2imf 606 $anternational cooperation$2imf 607 $aNigeria$2imf 615 0$aMonetary unions$xEconometric models. 615 0$aMoney 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aForeign Exchange 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aFinancial Aspects of Economic Integration 615 7$aEmpirical Studies of Trade 615 7$aPrices, Business Fluctuations, and Cycles: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aCurrency 615 7$aForeign exchange 615 7$aEconomic growth 615 7$aMonetary unions 615 7$aTerms of trade 615 7$aExchange rates 615 7$aReal exchange rates 615 7$aBusiness cycles 615 7$aEconomic policy 615 7$anternational cooperation 700 $aQureshi$b Mahvash$01610664 701 $aTsangarides$b Charalambos$01462110 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bAfrican Dept. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910823061703321 996 $aWhat is Fuzzy About Clustering in West Africa$93957655 997 $aUNINA
