These films appeared directly on the heels of Hollywood's transition to sound film. Uncanny Bodies argues that the coming of sound inspired more in these massively influential horror movies than screams, creaking doors, and howling wolves. A close examination of the historical reception of films of the transition period reveals that sound films could seem to their earliest viewers unreal and ghostly. By comparing this audience impression to the first sound horror films, Robert Spadoni makes a case for understanding film viewing as a force that can powerfully shape both the minutest aspects of individual films and the broadest sweep of film production trends, and for seeing aftereffects of the temporary weirdness of sound film deeply etched in the basic character of one of our most enduring film genres. 606 $aHorror films$zUnited States$xHistory and criticism 606 $aSound motion pictures$xHistory and criticism 610 $a20th century american culture. 610 $a20th century american film history. 610 $aamerican culture. 610 $aamerican film history. 610 $aamerican movie history. 610 $aaudience reception. 610 $acinema. 610 $aclassic horror cinema. 610 $adark. 610 $adracula. 610 $aearly sound film. 610 $afilm studies. 610 $afilmmaking. 610 $afrankenstein. 610 $ahollywood cinema. 610 $ahorror genre. 610 $ahorror movies. 610 $aintense. 610 $amodality. 610 $amovie studies. 610 $asound film. 610 $asvengali. 610 $athe hollywood review of 1929. 610 $auncanny theater. 610 $aunited states of america. 610 $auniversal pictures. 610 $avampires. 610 $aventriloquism. 615 0$aHorror films$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aSound motion pictures$xHistory and criticism. 676 $a791.43/6164 700 $aSpadoni$b Robert$f1964-$01007257 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910782160903321 996 $aUncanny bodies$92320184 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03998nam 2200625 450 001 9910822490903321 005 20230721044857.0 010 $a3-03813-299-3 035 $a(CKB)2670000000345755 035 $a(EBL)1869251 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000760601 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11432625 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000760601 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10714920 035 $a(PQKB)10734093 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1869251 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10814182 035 $a(OCoLC)865818284 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1869251 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000345755 100 $a20100222h20092009 uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aSynthesis and properties of surface coatings $eselected, peer reviewed papers from the 6th International Conference on Materials Processing for Properties and Performance (MP3-2007), 13-16 Sept. 2007, Beijing International Convention Center, China /$fedited by Huibin Xu [and three others] 210 1$aStafa-Zurich, Switzerland ;$aUK ;$aEnfield, New Hampshire :$cTrans Tech,$d[2009] 210 4$d©2009 215 $a1 online resource (76 p.) 225 1 $aAdvanced materials research,$x1022-6680 ;$vvolume 75 300 $a"This special issue contains selected papers presented at the Symposium on Synthesis and Properties of Surface Coatings, which is part of the 6th International Conference on Materials Processing for Properties and Performance (MP3-2007)."--Pref. 311 $a0-87849-319-0 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and indexes. 327 $aSynthesis and Properties of Surface Coatings; Preface; Committees; Table of Contents; Full-Scale Numerical Simulation of Plasma-Sprayed Functionally Gradient Materials; A Study of the Structural, Mechanical and Tribological Properties of Ti-Al-N Coatings Post-Treated by Carbon Implantation; Study on Photocatalytic Degradation of Electroless Ni-P-TiO2 Composite Coating; A Study on the Properties, Friction, Wear and Adhesion of HVOF Thermal Spray Coating of Micron Size Co-Alloy Powder 327 $aWear and Cutting Performance of Microdrills Coated Hard Film Deposited Using Closed Field Unbalanced Magnetron Sputter Ion PlatingDepletion Model of Aluminum in Bond Coat for Plasma-Sprayed Thermal Barrier Coatings; Oxidation Resistance of Multicomponent CrTiAlN Hard Coatings at Elevated Temperatures; Development of Spherical Iron-Based Composite Powder with Carried Alumina Abrasive Grains by Plasma Spray; Ceramic Coatings by Electrophoretic Deposition: Processing and Properties; Electroless Ni-Co-P Coatings on Sintered Nd-Fe-B Magnets with Improved Corrosion Resistance 327 $aStudy on the Pretreatment Process for Nickel Coating on Microspheres Effect of Silicon Sol on Anodic Oxidation Film of Titanium Alloys; Performance of TC4 Titanium Alloys Coated with Different Sol; Keywords Index; Authors Index 330 $aThis volume on the Synthesis and Properties of Surface Coatings includes presentations covering areas such as the properties and characterization of surface coatings and modifications, deposition and modification processes, plasma and ion-beam physics, industrial applications and novel processes.
