This study explores alternative ways to construct the modern Jewish nation. Jewish nationalism emerges from this book as a Diaspora phenomenon much broader than the Zionist movement. Like its non-Jewish counterparts, Jewish nationalism was first and foremost a movement to nationalize Jews, to construct a modern Jewish nation while simultaneously masking its very modernity. Diaspora Nationalism and Jewish Identity in Habsburg Galicia traces this process in what was the second largest Jewish community in Europe, Galicia. The history of this vital but very much understudied community of Jews fills a critical lacuna in existing scholarship while revisiting the broader question of how Jewish nationalism - or indeed any modern nationalism - was born. Based on a wide variety of sources, many newly uncovered, this study challenges the still-dominant Zionist narrative by demonstrating that Jewish nationalism was a part of the rising nationalist movements in Europe. 517 3 $aDiaspora Nationalism & Jewish Identity in Habsburg Galicia 606 $aJews$zGalicia (Poland and Ukraine)$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aJews$zGalicia (Poland and Ukraine)$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aJews$zGalicia (Poland and Ukraine)$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aZionism$zGalicia (Poland and Ukraine) 606 $aNationalism$zGalicia (Poland and Ukraine) 607 $aGalicia (Poland and Ukraine)$xPolitics and government$y18th century 607 $aGalicia (Poland and Ukraine)$xPolitics and government$y19th century 607 $aGalicia (Poland and Ukraine)$xPolitics and government$y20th century 607 $aGalicia (Poland and Ukraine)$xEthnic relations 615 0$aJews$xHistory 615 0$aJews$xHistory 615 0$aJews$xHistory 615 0$aZionism 615 0$aNationalism 676 $a305.892/40438609034 686 $aHIS010000$2bisacsh 700 $aShanes$b Joshua$f1971-$01556387 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910785519703321 996 $aDiaspora nationalism and Jewish identity in Habsburg Galicia$93819040 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04632nam 2200685 450 001 9910822292503321 005 20230803022436.0 010 $a3-95553-140-6 024 7 $a10.11129/detail.9783955531409 035 $a(CKB)2550000001152550 035 $a(EBL)1383642 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001082805 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12450827 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001082805 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11100958 035 $a(PQKB)11625155 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1383642 035 $a(DE-B1597)209483 035 $a(OCoLC)879945463 035 $a(OCoLC)979596679 035 $a(DE-B1597)9783955531409 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1383642 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10831530 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000001152550 100 $a20131025h20132013 uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aDesigning circulation areas $estairs, ramps, lifts : routing, planning principles /$fChristian Schittich (ed.) ; translation, Antoinette Aichele-Platen, Alistair Gray, Yasmin Gru?nding 210 1$aMunich :$cEdition DETAIL, Institut fu?r Internationale Architektur-Dokumentation GmbH & Col.
