Despite a large amount of work that has been done on the topic of ancient epistolography, material and formatting conventions have remained underexplored, mainly due to the difficulty of accessing images of letters in the past. Thanks to the increasing availability of digital images and the appearance of more detailed and sophisticated editions, we are now in a position to study such aspects. This book examines the development of letter writing conventions from the archaic to Roman times, and is based on a wide corpus of letters that survive on their original material substrates. The bulk of the material is from Egypt, but the study takes account of comparative evidence from other regions of the Graeco-Roman world. Through analysis of developments in the use of letters, variations in formatting conventions, layout and authentication patterns according to the sociocultural background and communicational needs of writers, this book sheds light on changing trends in epistolary practice in Graeco-Roman society over a period of roughly eight hundred years. This book will appeal to scholars of Epistolography, Papyrology, Palaeography, Classics, Cultural History of the Graeco-Roman World. 410 0$aMateriale Textkulturen 606 $aBriefe 606 $aEpistolografie 606 $aEpistolography 606 $aGraeco-Roman Egypt 606 $aGriechisch-Römisches Ägypten 606 $aLetters 606 $aPapyrus 606 $apapyrus 606 $3(DE-601)104675365$3(DE-588)4008240-4$aBrief$2gnd 606 $3(DE-601)105195634$3(DE-588)4197552-2$aKonvention$2gnd 606 $3(DE-601)105826847$3(DE-588)4113791-7$aGriechisch$2gnd 606 $3(DE-601)106204971$3(DE-588)4044571-9$aPapyrus$2gnd 606 $aHISTORY / Ancient / General$2bisacsh 610 $aEpistolography. 610 $aGraeco-Roman Egypt. 610 $aLetters. 610 $apapyrus. 615 4$aBriefe. 615 4$aEpistolografie. 615 4$aEpistolography. 615 4$aGraeco-Roman Egypt. 615 4$aGriechisch-Römisches Ägypten. 615 4$aLetters. 615 4$aPapyrus. 615 4$apapyrus. 615 7$aBrief 615 7$aKonvention 615 7$aGriechisch 615 7$aPapyrus 615 7$aHISTORY / Ancient / General. 676 $a930 686 $aAM 45200$2rvk 700 $aSarri$b Antonia, $0962080 712 02$aDeutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft$4fnd$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/fnd 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996309057503316 996 $aMaterial Aspects of Letter Writing in the Graeco-Roman World$92181309 997 $aUNISA LEADER 04045nam 2200781 450 001 9910822043303321 005 20231206222141.0 010 $a1-4426-9230-8 010 $a1-4426-8905-6 024 7 $a10.3138/9781442689053 035 $a(CKB)2550000000019345 035 $a(EBL)3268336 035 $a(OCoLC)923772457 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000478779 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11291661 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000478779 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10435243 035 $a(PQKB)10642249 035 $a(CaPaEBR)430851 035 $a(CaBNvSL)slc00224366 035 $a(DE-B1597)465354 035 $a(OCoLC)1013939104 035 $a(OCoLC)944176620 035 $a(DE-B1597)9781442689053 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4672666 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11258322 035 $a(OCoLC)958516548 035 $a(VaAlCD)20.500.12592/9m2127 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4672666 035 $a(OCoLC)1320899632 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_106137 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3268336 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000019345 100 $a20160923h20072007 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aSamuel Butler, Victorian against the grain $ea critical overview /$fedited by James G.
