One of the richest and most environmentally diverse sites (low uplands, lakes, swamps, the Saline River, the Shawnee Hills) in southern Illinois is located approximately two miles south of Carrier Mills. This book focuses on the results of a five-year archaeological investigation at three sites located in a 143-acre area known as the Carrier Mills Archaeological District. This area, rich in archaeological treasures and keys to the prehistoric people of southern Illinois, is also coal mining territory. In cooperation with Peabody Coal Company, archaeologists in this study have sought to learn the ages of the various prehistoric occupations represented at the sites; to better understand the technology and social organization of these prehistoric people; to better understand the environment; to collect information about diet, health, and physical characteristics of the prehistoric inhabitants; and to investigate the remains of the 19th-century Lakeview settlement"--$cProvided by publisher. 606 $aIndians of North America$zIllinois$zCarrier Mills Region$xAntiquities 606 $aAfrican Americans$zIllinois$zCarrier Mills Region$xAntiquities 607 $aCarrier Mills Region (Ill.)$xAntiquities 607 $aIllinois$xAntiquities 615 0$aIndians of North America$xAntiquities. 615 0$aAfrican Americans$xAntiquities. 676 $a977.3/992 686 $aSOC003000$aHIS036010$2bisacsh 700 $aJefferies$b Richard W$01694716 701 $aGatlin$b Thomas W$01695431 712 02$aSouthern Illinois University at Carbondale.$bCenter for Archaeological Investigations. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910821545403321 996 $aThe archaeology of Carrier Mills$94074661 997 $aUNINA
