Colleges bombard new students with the message to ?get out there!? and ?find your place? by joining student organizations, sports teams, clubs and the like. Nunn shows that this reflects a flawed understanding of what belonging is and how it works. Drawing on the sociological theories of Emile Durkheim, College Belonging shows that belonging is something that members of a community offer to each other. It is something that must be given, like a gift. Individuals cannot simply walk up to a group or community and demand belonging. That?s not how it works. The group must extend a sense of belonging to each and every member. It happens by making a person feel welcome, to feel that their presence matters to the group, that they would be missed if they were gone. This critical insight helps us understand why colleges' push for students simply to ?get out there!? does not always work. 410 0$aCritical issues in American education (Rutgers University Press) 606 $aCollege freshmen$zUnited States 606 $aFirst-generation college students$zUnited States 606 $aBelonging (Social psychology) 606 $aCollege environment$zUnited States 606 $aCollege student orientation$zUnited States 606 $aTeacher-student relationships$zUnited States 610 $aCollege, American Campus, Institution, First-Generation Students, American Education, Youth, Diploma, School, Degree, College Students, Academia, Higher Education, University, Teacher, Student Organizations, Community, Social-Belonging, Diversity. 615 0$aCollege freshmen 615 0$aFirst-generation college students 615 0$aBelonging (Social psychology) 615 0$aCollege environment 615 0$aCollege student orientation 615 0$aTeacher-student relationships 676 $a378.198 700 $aNunn$b Lisa M.$f1975-$01603984 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910821269003321 996 $aCollege belonging$93968633 997 $aUNINA
