Defining a board as the body that changes monetary instruments to achieve a specified target, we discuss the possible determinants of a board's size. The empirical relevance of these factors is examined using a new dataset that covers the de jure membership size of 84 central bank boards at the end of 2003. We find that larger and more heterogeneous countries, countries with stronger democratic institutions, countries with floating exchange rate regimes, and independent central banks with more staff tend to have larger boards. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/281 606 $aBanks and banking, Central 606 $aMonetary policy 606 $aBanks and Banking$2imf 606 $aForeign Exchange$2imf 606 $aBanks$2imf 606 $aDepository Institutions$2imf 606 $aMicro Finance Institutions$2imf 606 $aMortgages$2imf 606 $aCentral Banks and Their Policies$2imf 606 $aBanking$2imf 606 $aCurrency$2imf 606 $aForeign exchange$2imf 606 $aCentral bank autonomy$2imf 606 $aExchange rate arrangements$2imf 606 $aFloating exchange rates$2imf 606 $aCentral bank organization$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking$2imf 607 $aUnited Kingdom$2imf 615 0$aBanks and banking, Central. 615 0$aMonetary policy. 615 7$aBanks and Banking 615 7$aForeign Exchange 615 7$aBanks 615 7$aDepository Institutions 615 7$aMicro Finance Institutions 615 7$aMortgages 615 7$aCentral Banks and Their Policies 615 7$aBanking 615 7$aCurrency 615 7$aForeign exchange 615 7$aCentral bank autonomy 615 7$aExchange rate arrangements 615 7$aFloating exchange rates 615 7$aCentral bank organization 615 7$aBanks and banking 700 $aBerger$b Helge$01630356 701 $aLybek$b Tonny$01630357 701 $aNitsch$b Volker$01630358 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bMonetary and Capital Markets Dept. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910821267203321 996 $aCentral Bank Boards Around the World$93968616 997 $aUNINA
