A través de las narraciones cortas, poemas, ensayos, cartas, artículos y reseñas, en este volumen reunidos, se accede a una muestra de las apuestas estéticas, reflexiones vitales y tanteos estilísticos emanados de la pluma de mujeres que encontraron en la escritura una vía para condensar pulsiones creativas y expresivas. Tres fueron los impresos periódicos que sirvieron como fuente primaria para la selección de los textos: Biblioteca de Señoritas, El Mosaico y La Mujer. Los tres tienen en común haber sido editados en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX en la ciudad de Bogotá (Colombia). La estructura de esta selección se articula en cuatro partes. La primera es el estudio introductorio titulado "La prensa femenina en la Colombia decimonónica: en torno a su función literaria, política y social", de Claire Emilie Martin y Melissa Parra Rodríguez, en el cual se ofrece una contextualización muy general del lugar de la mujer en la prensa del siglo XIX colombiano. La segunda parte, el núcleo del libro, es la selección de obras, agrupadas, en un primer nivel, por impreso periódico de origen y, en un segundo nivel, por géneros literarios. Cynthia González Pulgarín selecciona y presenta las obras ubicadas en Biblioteca de Señoritas. Melisa Flórez y Laura Jaramillo están a cargo de la presentación y selección de textos de El Mosaico. Juan Diego Buitrago hace lo propio con La Mujer. La tercera parte de este volumen presenta la bibliografía.
