The woman detective has also had worldwide appeal; yet, with the exception of Christie's Miss Marple, the names of female detectives and their authors have only recently gained wide attention through the popularity of Marcia Muller, Sue Grafton, and Sara Paretsky. The essays in this collection grapple with a wide range of issues important to the female sleuth - the most important, perhaps, being the oft-heard challenge to her suitability for the job. Not surprisingly, gender issues are the main focus of all the essays; indeed, in detective novels with a woman protagonist, these issues are often right at the surface. Some of the papers see the female sleuth as an important force in popular fiction, but many also challenge the notion that the woman detective is a positive model for feminists. They argue that fictional female sleuths have lost the `otherness' that a feminine approach to the genre should encourage. Collectively, the essays also reveal the differences between British and American perspectives on the woman detective. 606 $aDetective and mystery stories, English$xHistory and criticism 606 $aDetective and mystery stories, American$xHistory and criticism 606 $aFeminism and literature$zEnglish-speaking countries$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aWomen and literature |zEnglish-speaking countries |xHistory|y20th century$xEnglish-speaking countries$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aAmerican fiction$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEnglish fiction$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism 606 $aFeminist fiction, American$xHistory and criticism 606 $aFeminist fiction, English$xHistory and criticism 607 $aEnglish-speaking countries$2fast 608 $aHistory. 608 $aDetective and mystery stories, English. 608 $aDetective and mystery stories, American. 608 $aCriticism, interpretation, etc. 608 $aDetective and mystery stories, English$xHistory and criticism. 608 $aDetective and mystery stories, American$xHistory and criticism. 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aDetective and mystery stories, English$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aDetective and mystery stories, American$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aFeminism and literature$xHistory 615 0$aWomen and literature |zEnglish-speaking countries |xHistory|y20th century$xEnglish-speaking countries$xHistory 615 0$aAmerican fiction$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEnglish fiction$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aFeminist fiction, American$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aFeminist fiction, English$xHistory and criticism. 676 $a823.0872099287 702 $aIrons$b Glenwood$g(Glenwood Henry),$f1951- 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910820858103321 996 $aFeminism in women's detective fiction$94123810 997 $aUNINA
