In den 1990er Jahren dehnten viele Staaten die Anerkennung familiärer Arbeit in der Rentenversicherung auch auf die Pflege von Angehörigen aus. Diese Arbeit gibt erstmals einen umfassenden vergleichenden Überblick über die Anerkennung von Kindererziehung und Pflegearbeit in den Rentenversicherungen aller Mitgliedstaaten der EU und aller Beitrittskandidaten. Es steht zudem die Einordnung jener Vorschriften in das europäische Sozialrecht im Mittelpunkt. Nachdem der EuGH erst in jüngster Zeit in den Urteilen Elsen und Kauer bzw. Gaumain-Cerry und Barth über die Vereinbarkeit nationaler Vorschriften zur Anerkennung von Kindererziehung bzw. Pflegearbeit mit den Vorgaben des europäischen Gemeinschaftsrechts entschieden hat, sind nach wie vor viele Fragen ungeklärt. Dieser Fragen nimmt sich der Autor umfassend an.
